Were Mannon's From Ireland in the 1750's Quakers? Or Were They Protestant Immigrants?

My 4th Great Grandfather seems to be named, John Mannon. His profile says that he lived in St. George's Hundred in New Castle County, Delaware and he was born in Ireland. This all make sense since many of my relatives came from Pennsylvania. What I am wondering is if he and other Mannon's were Protestants who simply came from Ireland (originally from England) to live in the Delaware Valley at a time when Quakers were doing the same thing (to escape the turmoil of the wars in Ireland between the Celtic Catholics, and the incoming Protestant English and Scots). Or...if the Mannons were some of those Quakers themselves. I read a whole book on Irish Quakers immigrating into the Pennsylvania Province between 1683 and 1750, and not a word of any Mannon's in the certificates of removal (which Quakers had to get from their religious organizations in order to move from one place to another). So I am tending to think that my 4th grandfather just happened to arrive at the tail end of this huge Quaker exodus from Ireland (and Europe), and that his timing was just a coincidence. If anyone knows any better than I, please let me know.

You probably have your answer by now but Mahala married Jonathan P. Sutton on 24 Feb 1854 in Hunterdon County, NJ. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery - Dehli, Delaware County, Iowa.

I am working on the Hoppock line. Trying to connect Elizabeth Hoppock b.1792 and Mary Hoppock b.1804 (mother of Mahala). I believe they are sisters but have nothing concrete.

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I don't believe there is a will, but in the land transactions of the State Archives, there is a document transferring land belonging to the heirs of George Hoppock, which includes the names of his four children: Elizabeth, Catherine, Peter and Mary and their spouses.

There is also a letter in the Hunterdon County Historical Society from Peter's granddaughter to Hiram Deats, where she refers to her grandfather's sisters, Elizabeth Hamilton, Katie Stevenson and Polly Manning.

Hope this helps,
Chris

Brenda,

Not sure if we have been in contact before. I am trying to figure out if Peter Hoppock, who married Susannah Van Horn, had any siblings.

I believe that Elizabeth Hoppock b. 1792 who married William Osmun in 1811 and Catharine Hoppock b.1795 who married James Stevenson, are his sisters. Elizabeth and Catharine are definitely sisters, just need to connect with Peter or his parents.

Do you have a will for Peter d. 1878 or his father George Hoppock d.1849? They are on my to do list the next time I go to the NJ archives. Not sure if they wrote a will...

- Jeff
hansmansgarage at hotmail dot com

Folks,

I am interested in any more information than that found in the find a grave record for Elizabeth.

See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=94...

I study historic rattlesnake populations in Iowa. Of the 82 deaths I have found due to rattlesnakes, she is only one of two where a pregnant lady also lost her fetus. A family history (cited in the grave memorial) might help me decide if this was a massasauga or timber rattlesnake. A student and I are writing on article on these two deaths.

Yes they were Dunkards, I followed the Mannen's migrating from Pa. to Ohio, Ind. Dakota's then Iowa. That is the same migration that the Dunkards did.

Boaz born 1765, married to Judah died abt. Oct 29, 1822 in Windsor Township, Lawrence Co. Ohio.

Boaz Mannen born in 1816 in Ohio married Martha A Simmons. Boaz died in 1893 in Iowa.

My Grandfather John H.
From 2 deeds in Lawrence Co, OH, it appears that James is definitely the son of Henry & Lucy. Lawrence CO Recorders Office, Deed Record, v 7, p433: Henry & Lucy sold 120 acres in Twp 2, Range 16, Sect 14 to James for $1000 on 27 MArch 1837. On the same day, also for $1000, James sold the same land back to Henry with the stipulation that Henry & Lucy could continue to live with James and recieve all necessary food & care. If James defaults, Henry & Lucy can sell the land to raise money for their support. ANy money remaining at their deaths goes to James.
Boaz Mannon also had a son James, who moved with Boaz' widow Judah and other children to Champaign Co, OH c 1829.

I'm getting back to some serious research on the Mannons finally. Did Boaz/Bose die in one of the Dakotas? There doesn't seem to be a record of his death in Iowa. DO you have a reference for their belonging to the Dunkards? (I have ancestors unrelated to the Mannons who may have been Dunkards in Canada.)

Hi Pat
This is Carol, Connie's friend. My husband had the surgery. Sorry if I confused you. I will pass your e-mail on to Connie and she will probably contact you. Last I heard she was having modem problems so it may be awhile. I don't know if that has been fixed or not. I hope you both connect and find there is a relationship connection. I know her father-in-law would be happy to learn more about his family. If you don't hear from her please let me know and maybe we can work out some family details for her.
Carol

Hello Connie,,,,,Thank you so much for your reply. I am so sorry to hear of your husband's surgery. I send you best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. My father had a cousin Susie Lee Mannon. She spoke of another cousin of theirs named Goldie. I was having trouble tracking my mannon roots past my father's father, but the name Goldie we seem to have in common has sent me alot of hope and new places to look. We knew that we had relatives way back in the tree that had moved to California. If you would like to correspond, I would be pleased to hear from you. My email is ptfloyd56@yahoo.com. Again please accept my sympathies and best wishes for your husband,,,,sincerely Pat

Hi Pat,
I am doing research for Connie (Tom) Mannon. We live in California. Her father-in-law wanted infomation on his family. Her father-in-laws name is Thomas Ken Mannon born in Tennessee. He was born on Feb 29, (either 1928 or 1932) he is not sure. He had a brother Willie Vernon, a sister, Gertrude (he says they called her Goldie). I found a 1930 census with a Goldie and Willie V. On the census the fathers name was Mscom T. Mannon. Mr Mannon said his fathers name was Tilford which could be the T. on the census. I found info showing Tilford married Alma Ball in Tennessee. Also Thomas Ken Mannon married Virginia Saverino in California in 1964. I have found information on the Ball family but he is concerned about his. I had to put this research aside as my husband had heart surgery. I know any information you may have would be appreciated by Connie.

Carol

I am researching my 3rd gr. grandfather, William O. Manning/Mannon. He was b. abt. 1794 in Franklin Co., VA. He m. Nancy Mabry/Mayberry. I have found some list his father as Henry Mannon, b. 08 Oct. 1759, m. Elizabeth Lucy Dillon. Henry and Elizabeth lived in Lawrence, OH, when Henry died in 1838. Who is Henry's father? I have seen a Merdith listed as his father and a Samuel. Anyone have any facts about this?

Thanks so much,
Carla Bowlin

Andrew J., Samuel, Elizabeth Jane Mannon/Manning/Mannin/Mannan/Mannon

I am looking for anyone researching Andrew J. Manning. Born c. 1808 KY died 1857 Tarrant Co. TX. I first pick him up in Harlan Co. KY 1820 census in Andrew Mannan's household (probably his father). He is also linked to a Samuel Mannan age 18-25 on 1820 Harlan Co. census (they will migrate to Texas together). Samuel (1823) and Andrew (1826, 1828) purchase land along the Yellow Creek and Cannon creek in Harlan Co. as Manion. In 1830 Andrew Manning is married and now head of household in Harlan Co. Samuel is still present with 7 dependents. In 1840 census, I pick up Andrew and Andrew J. Manning in Ripley Co. MO. Samuel and family are listed in Pulaski Co. MO. In 1844 Andrew J. Manning, blacksmith is listed as an Early Texas Settler receiving land in Dallas with the Peters Colony. He is listed as being born in KY and removed from MO. I find him on the 1846 Dallas Co. Poll Lists as well. In 1847 Elizabeth Jane Manning (b. circa 1827-1831 KY) marries D.R.S.C. Galla(o)way in Dallas. In 1850 Samuel is listed on the census with wife Nancy A. and children born in IL (he must have gone to MO via IL). No census listing anywhere for Andrew J. but many listings in the Dallas court abstracts where he served as a juror 1846-1854. In 1857 I find where Andrew J. Manning's will was probated in Tarrant Co. My direct ancestor is Elizabeth Jane (Manning) Galloway. She has 5 children (Martin P., Mary Elizabeth (my ancestor), John D, Nancy A., and Margaret J. Galloway). I am trying to figure out Elizabeth Jane's relationship to either Samuel or Andrew. Does this family tree ring a bell with anyone? I would appreciate any information you might have.

I just started about 3 months ago and it has become an addiction for me :)

On my side, the furthest I go back is William Mannon. I believe he is the father of James M.D. Mannon who was born around 1818 and died 1870. Do you have any information that you could share? I would love to find out if William is the correct name and where they originally came from. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg Mannon

James Mannon shows up in the newly formed Washington County, Pennsylvania about 1800. He forms a friendship with a Christain Slusher and marries his daughter Mary Elizabeth and in February 1, 1828 she give birth to here 3rd son James Madison Mannon, who in 1850 marries Sarah Houston and they have three children together but Sarah dies giving birth to their forth child in 1858. James then marries a neighbors daughter, Isabell Bane, to gether they have 7 children and her daughter Sarah Francis is who my line comes from. I have been researching the Mannon family for over 8 years and can not seem to find where our first James came from. I am told that he was a descend of the French Hugenots that fled France for freedom of religion, but have not been able to confirm that descend.

Gregory, Hmm.. that's a name you don't see often, I have a brother named that. Anyway, I would be happy to share what I have, what I know for sure is my James Madison goes back to the James that is in Washington county, Pennsylvania in the township of Amwell, that is well documented in my family. What I don't know for sure yet is if I have all the children list for James Sr. and wife Mary {Slusher) Mannon, I do believe there is a son William. My James Madison was one of the younger ones of their children and they were married about 1818 or 1819 so your William could be a brother to my James. If you are a member of ancesty.com my tree is registered as the 'Moore Family Tree'

I am helping a friend find information on her father-in-laws family. She has limited information. Tilford Mannon was born Mar 1895 in Tennessee and died Jan 1973 in Paris, Tennessee. He had a brother Willie Vernon born around 1892.
If anyone has information it would be greatly apprciated.

Thank you
Carol Spronz

I am trying to find the name of the Mannon who married Hettie Himes. In 1915 Hettie (Himes) Mannon was living in Ringling, Meagher Co., MT, according to obit of her father, Lyman Himes.

The Himes family were old residents of Mercer Co, IL having lived there since 1870

Hettie Himes was born 21 Dec 1878, Aledo Twp., Mercer Co.,IL . Believe she was divorced from the Mannon she married before 1930. No children that I know of. Returned to Aledo Twp and lived with her mother, Leah Elizabeth (Lemoine) Himes until Leah's death in 1943.

Hettie died June 1970. Social Security Death Index says her # issued in Michigan, not Illinois.

There are land records for a Harry C. Mannon, 1915, Meagher County, Montana.

Wondering if this is the Mannon Hettie Himes married.

Does anything about this line appear familiar to your Mannon line?
