I don't see any mention of Jasper A. Maltby's civilian occupation. He was a gunsmith/gunmaker of considerable talent. Rifles made by him are stamped "J. A. MALTBY GALENA" and are usually serial numbered as well. He was noted for heavy percussion "Plains Rifles", made for large game in the far West. He also made some fine target rifles, some of which had full length telescopic sights. I own seven Maltby rifles, as well as four imported (English) shotguns that are marked with his name.
