Hi William,
I get my family name from Pierre Malo and Chlorinde Brunelle (my great-great grandparents) who moved to Montreal from the Varennes area in the late 19th century.
Sorry, for not getting back to earlier but the replies to my posts notification doesn't seem to be working for me. Anyways, regarding Louis Malo I have not been able to find any trace of his parents but I do have some interesting leads. One avenue I have investigating is that he was an orphan and was given the name of Malo for some reason. I don't recall exactly where I got this idea but it seems to me that in Trois-Rivieres there was a child with the last name of Malo in the late 18th century at some orphanage but the ages didn't line up with Louis. Another interesting lead is that this Louis Malo was possibly an officer of the peace and was responsible for making arrests during the Rebellion of 1837-1838. You can see references to Louis Malo in multiple areas. Catherine Dufresne listed her deceased husband's occupation as a constable on the parish death register. If this were the case then possibly finding some police employee record would be helpful but so far I have turned up nothing there either.
Hopefully you find this information useful and please let me know if you come with some solid info!
Cheers,
Eric
