Oh wow! My mother-in-law's grandmother was Letitia May Myers! She knows very little about her family and I've just started looking at my husband's genealogy. I wish I could help you. So far I have identified 8 of Eliza and Thomas' children and have come across some records where his middle name is Wilson - so I'm not sure if it's the same couple.

If there is any other information about this line that you'd be willing to share, I'd love to hear more!
I recently received this wonderful picture from some distant cousins. Eliza Myers nee Maharg married Thomas Watson Myers. As you'll see, Eliza and her daughter Letitia have been identified already. Eliza and Thomas had a total of 13 children, (I believe), so they are not all in this picture. It was likely taken between 1926 (after Thomas's death) and definitely before 1938. Are there any great great etc. grandchildren who might be able to identify others in the picture?

Excerpts from Orangeville Sun Newspaper. Last para not from Sun.

28 January 1875 -- Sad Accident -- As Mr. A. Maharg was oiling the horsepower of a sawing machine in motion on Monday, his right arm got caught in the gearing and was completely crushed. Drs Henry and James were immediatley called for but owing to the almost impassable state of the roads, were unable to reach the sufferer until 15 hours after the accident. They amputatedd the arm about three inches below the elbow joint.
This is but one of a long series of accidents which has befallen Mr Maharg in a very brief period. Last fall, his residence, a portion of his crops, and the fences on his farm were destroyed by bush fires. Later in the season he had three valuable head of cattle and a horse killed on the railway, while this winter, his wife and a child died. And now he has lost his arm. In this long list of calamaties he has the sympathy of the entire community.
******************************************
THE SUN - THURSDAY MORNING, MARCH 4, 1875 (Orangeville, Ontario, newspaper)
4 March, 1875 -- Mr A. Maharg of Amaranth who about four weeks ago got his arm so severely crushed in the cogs of a horsepower that it had to be amputated below the elbow, died on Saturday from the effects of his injuries.
The deceased, who was about 40 years of age, was very generally respected and leaves a large family to mourn his loss.
*******************************************************

same paper - same day and page - A concert in aid of the family of the late A. Maharg, will be held in Currie's Hall, Camilla on Friday 12th of March, commencing at 6 pm. -- tickets 25 cents each. Much sympathy exists for the family who, by long series of misfortunes, resulting in the deaths of their parents, have not been left in very good circumstances, and in order to afford the public an oppertinity of giving expression of their sympathy, a comittee, of which Mr. H. Currie is chairman, has got up the concert. The object in view should ensure a large attendance.
******************************************************
ORANGEVILLE SUN - newspaper
19 April, 1877 -- Executors Notice -- The creditors of the late Archibald Maharg are requested to meet on the 28th of April at Pattullo & Scotts Law Office, Orangeville at the hour of 1 o'clock for
the purpose of settling claims against the estate.
George H. Hershaw
John Harshaw
Clark Maharg
Executors

Archibald's parents were _________ Maharg and Jane Murphy. Jane Murphy married 2nd, Moses Harshaw. It appears that Archibald and Clark's father may have died before Jane came to Canada. And yes, Archie and Clark are brothers.
Grace Ann Freeland's parents were James Freeland and Elizabeth Mitchell.
Also named Archibald Maharg but older. At the museum near Orangeville, the curator Mr. Stephen Brown, told me that Archibald Maharg (older) is/was the uncle of Archibald Maharg and NOT his father. I've been trying to verify the truth of this for a long time.
I will continue to post what I have, as quick as I can.
I've not been on these boards for a long long time and had to get a new password...lol
There were several articles in the Orangeville Banner about Archibald and I will post one here but would prefer it if you (or/and) Julie would e-mail me so I could just make up a word document and send it to you both. Not sure how much information you can put on one of these boards, in one reply. I check my e-mail at least once a day.
From Orangeville Banner Newspaper :

Will wait for your e-mail,,,thanks,,,,,Brenda

What a great find, thank you so much for your posts. Archibald Maharg and Grace Ann Freeland are my 4th gr grandparents. In 2001, I visited their headstones, but have not been able to find a lot of information since and thought I was at the end of the line. Their daughter Eliza (Maharg) Myers was my 3rd gr grandmother, I have a picture and descendant details if anyone would like to share.
Christina Plant
Mississauga, Ontario

Craig, Thanks for the info on the book. I have a few Milnes in the tree now but not your name. I would muchly appreciate any family info you could send. So far I have James Milne marrying Sarah Leah Naomi Myers in 1908 and having children
James, Alfred, Norma, and Thomas but have nothing else. No birth, death, marriage, children, etc.

I am still trying to find birth, marriage, & emigration records on Archibald from Ireland.

Thanks,
Jim Kirby

kirby-j2@rogers.com
519-207-4593
St. Thomas, Ontario

Julie, I am related to Eliza Maharg & Thomas Watson Myers family decendants. Eliza & Thomas had child - Grace Helena who married Joseph Robinson. They had a girl - Ethel Eliza Robinson , who is my grandmother. Ethel married Harry Suter and their daughter Elizabeth Grace married my father William Kirby. I have a picture of Joe Robinson and Helena Myers in Gravenhurst.
Also in 1871 Census Archibald Maharg & Grace Anne Freeland lived in Armanath Twsp, Mono Mills ONT. Archy was born in USA and Grace in Ireland. Also living in Mono Mills in 1891 was Clark Maharg,52, born NS & wife Mary Jane.49, born Ireland. I don't yet know the relationship between the families or if there is one.

I would love to get a copy of the book your talking about but cannot source it. Please let me know if you come across a copy of it.

You may want to try the Sir name "Graham" from Scotland before 1891. Many Graham's that were forced to leave Scotland changed there names to Maharg.......Graham spelled backwards
to re-enter Scotland, and to live in peace in Ireland, and not to be prostituted by the English.

Hi Joanne, I can add to your post
I have heard the name Clark Maharg spoken of by my Grandmother Ethel York but, was too young to remember much.
Archibald Maharg and Grace Ann freeland would have been my Great Great grandparents. Their son John Archibald was my Great Grandfather who married Mary Isabel Maynard January 02, 1895. They had three children George Archibald, Doris and my grandmother Ethel Isabel Katie. On Wednesday November 16th, 1921 in a double wedding ceremony George married Lillian Morrison and Ethel married Issac Bert York.
Doris married Hugh Ferguson (date unknown to me).
John Archibald & Mary Isabel Maharg, Doris Ferguson, Bert & Ethel York are all buried in the family plot in Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw SK.
Bert York

Jamie, it would appear that I am 3rd cousin - 1x removed with your wife! Clark's sister is Eliza Maharg. Eliza married Thomas Watson Myers. A whole gaggle of her relatives moved to Pinto Creek and Hazenmore Saskatchewan, Eliza included, (before 1916). The dust bowls were devastating and the family scattered. Many of their descendants ended up near Bergland, Ontario. Eliza's death certificate indicates that she was living in Hazenmore but was buried in Kitchener - I'm assuming that she was visiting her son. She was born in 1859 and died in 1938. (There is a book called "Footprints in Time: Hazenmore". I borrowed once from the library, but I am sure that I missed relative stories in there, so I am biting the bullet and buying it - it's not cheap!) The Winnipeg library had it brought in from another province for me the first time I saw it.

Now if my records are correct, Clark married Minnie Staples and and Lula Knapp, but I have no other information about descendants. Perhaps we could swap gedcom files? Or reports in word?

Julie

Hi Craig.

My grandpa Percy Huntley grew up in Hazenmore. His grandparents are Eliza and Thomas and his parents are Ethel Myers and Isaiah (Ike) Huntley.
They moved to Ontario near the Lake of the Woods in the 30's.

I borrowed the Hazenmore book from the Ottawa archives a couple years back and it had such great information on the family. I realize now that there is likely a lot more information that I missed, so I am planning on buying it. I have been in contact with Diane Jordet. I have a similar kind of book from the area that my grandpa moved to, and it has lots of information about the family after they moved from Hazenmore, (called "Water Under the Bridge")

I am very curious to know how we are related!
Hi Joanne.
I am assuming that by now you must have found a relative to pass on all those treasures to! Ivan and I are quite distantly related - 1st cousin - 3x removed. His grandparents - Archibald Maharg and Grace Ann Freeland are my 3rd great grandparents.
The link that you posted to see letters was dead, but I googled it and quickly found the new link. Here is the link to one of the letters - http://www.canadianletters.ca/letters.php?letterid=1675&...

What a treasure!!
I totally relate to your desire to get these valuables into the hand of a relative. I have great pictures of people that I'm not related to, and I love getting them to family members.

If by some small chance, you still haven't found a relative that wants them, let me know. I can't imagine that that would be the case, but just checking.

Thanks so much for saving all those items!!

Julie Bell

I'm the administrator of the greater Mac Harg family DNA project. Our goal is to connect the various family clusters, helping researchers to close the gap in the paper trail and also to learn what we can about the Mac Harg family. We are having success in connecting family groupings and have found our family of origin over 1500 years ago, through DNA. For information go to www.familytreedna.com/McHarg_McHargue
We would really like to have some Mahargs in the project. We need males of the Maharg name because the y chromosome is handed down just as the surname is. Please contact me at glynispattersonatgmail.com

Hi All,

My wife is a 2nd great-granddaughter of Archibald Maharg. Clark Stewart Maharg was my wife's great-grandfather.

I would be interested in collaborating and sharing with others regarding research of Archibald's ancestors and descendants.

In fact we live in Waterloo and I expect we may have distant cousins nearby.

Thanks,
Jamie Buchanan
