When the Grahams were expelled from the Borders and prohibited from returning, many changed their names and returned to their Ancestral homes. The "Reiver" history of these families - Storys, Kerrs, Croziers, Bells, Armstrongs, Johnstons, Elliotts etc often refer to the new names adopted by these feuding families. The name "Meharg" is also used by the Grahams. One very striking memorial exists to the famous George Graham at Arthuret Church, just outside Longtown, Cumbria. Dated mid 1600s, this tablet in the Church, is significant to all Graham & Maharg (Meharg) Researchers. Arthuret Church is the place credited with inventing the word "BLACKMAIL" as it was here, in the Porch of the Church, that the Godfathers of those turbulent days collected their "blackmeal" as a kind of "protection payment".
The World Storey Reunion 2004 is being held in Cumbria, centred on Bewcastle, Longtown, Brampton areas - see www.storygenealogy.com for details.
