Maranda, tell us more about your great-great-grandmother. Who did she marry, and when? Do you have her death record? Which censuses do you find her in, and what are her children's names?

Don't forget to look at different spellings. My McBees supposedly once spelled the surname Magby, although I haven't found the records proving that, yet. You might find some help on the McBee list -- look at Links and Announcements on this board for more information.

As I get images of the census, I'll link the images to the index entries.

Please contact me if you already have scanned census pages or actual census extracts that you would like me to link to, or upload. Also, some of the names are obviously incorrect. If you have corrections to the index, please send along your evidence, and I'll make the corrections.

If you have a page about one of these people, I can link to that, too. As time goes on, I hope to have a pages or pages for each of the census years. Thanks to some of our faithful researchers, some of that data is already available, and I'll be posting it soon.

Valorie

MAGBY in Chambers Co. 1870, 1860 US Census

Dear Alice,
In the census of 1870 for Chambers county I found a John Magby, I did not make note at the time of whether he was white or black. In the census of 1860 I found Rebecca Magbee, age 73 who was born in Georgia, I believe she was the widow of Labon Magbee. With her is listed a John W. Magbee, age 40, possibly her son and possibly the same John Magby found later in 1870. Another household in 1870 lists William L. Magbee, age 38, born in Georgia, his wife Mary 38, born in South Carolina, children John, age 15, Milton, 13, Judith 10, sarah, 7, Wm. L., 5, Albert J., 3, and Mary W., 6 months, all born in Alabama.

Jacob & Janie MAGBEE 1870 Chambers Co. AL, ch. John, Will, Henry, Elana, Gus, Susan

Dear Jean, (from biy@netzero.net)
I sent a message before, but I don't know what happened to it. Please include your email address next time. Yes, I have done extensive research on my own family in Chambers Co., Ala, near Layfayette Ala., and in Dekalb co., Ft. Payne.
I found my greatgreat grandfather Jacob, and his wife Janie in the 1870 census in chambers co. Listed with him are my great grandfather John who was 18 at the time and his brothers and sisters. I also found the family in the census of 1880 with Janie as the head of household, and my great grandfather john had his own residence with his wife and 3 small children, one of whom was my grandfather. In 1880 both Janie and her son have changed the spelling from Magbee to Magbie, and the spelling remains Magbie until this day with the exception of 1900 when it appears in the census as Magby in Dekalb County. I was intrigued because you said your John had brothers named Will, and Henry, so did mine. Henry is 12 in 1870 and william is 6. There is also a sister Elana, age 16, a brother Gus, 14, and Susan, 9 years. Susan is the onIy one of great grandad's siblings that I could find later. She is found in the 1910 census in Ft. Payne ala., married to Perry Orr. My aunt remembered her and told me the name of her husband. She also remembered her great uncle Will. She said he was lightskinned , had curly hair, and that he had a child by a woman in Fort Payne to whom he was not married. In the census of 1880 Janie has 3 more children Sarah, 11; Thom, 9: and Frank, age 5. I don't know what happened to them. According to my aunt, who is 90 years old, her great uncle Thom went to Oklahoma and took his mother Janie with him. Apparently, this move took place sometime between 1890 and 1910. Thom left Oklahoma and eventually came back east.

Relatives of Kim Magbie

This message is for Kim Magbie who emailed me back in January. I am related to you. Your grandfather and my grandfather were first cousins. Your grandfather Lloyd Hugh Magbie was raised by my greatgrandfather John Magbie. Your grandfather's mother was Lillie Belle Magbie Durrer or Durrogh. She died in 1919, possibly of the Spanish flu, and she is buried in Glkenwood cemetary in Ft. Payne. Great granddad and his wife nancy raised her 3 boys after her death. They migrated from Ft. Payne Ala. to Cleveland, Ohio about 1917. Great grandad(your great great grandad) was in his late 60s at the time he came to Cleveland with your grandfather. I interviewed your grandfathers youngest brother Thomas shortly before his death 2 years ago. Thomas was a gifted artist and an inventor. He said that your grandfather's brother Robert died of cancer in 1928, he was an electrician by trade. He also said that your grandfather Hugh was an exellent athlete in high school. Great granddad sent him to Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio for one year, before he died. John Magbie died in 1931 and is buried in Highlandview cemetary in an unmarked grave. Your family owes a great debt to this man who migrated in his old age in order to give his grandsons a chance for an education outside of the Jim Crow South.
Please post a message on the magbie message board or email me directly. biy@netzero.net I would like to send you a copy of the family history I have written. I also have a picture of your great, great grandad John.
Bev Yaman

Hi,

I'm researching Magby in the St Clair AL area among others, are you restricting your search to just the Magbie spelling or are you using all of the variations? The reason I ask is that I was searching for my ggg grandfather with the spelling Megabee and getting no where. When I finally realized that it was a variation of McBee, I started finding family all over the place.
Ali Ingle
ali_ingle@hotmail.com

I'd like to welcome you to the Magbie Message Board. I'm the Admin, and also run a number of boards for the other spellings of McBee, McAbee, etc. We have a wonderful McBee list, for those of you who are interested -- lots of great research going on there, in all lines and for all spellings of the surname. For more information, see

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/m/mcbee.html

Notice that we can now list surnames that are mentioned in each post, and choose a classification. Please do this each time you post, to enable others to find you! Use Query for all questions, even about various Data types. The Data classifications are for actual Bible records, Obituaries, Pension files, etc. Also notice that you can attach pictures, scans of documents, and short GEDCOMS to your posts, too.
Their were four men with the surname of Magbie who fought for the Union in the Civil War. They were all in the 1st regiment of the United States Colored Heavy Artillery. Possibly brothers. All are listed on the African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington. I have obtained the war records of all of them. Their names were Jack, Major, Adam, and Albert. If you want to check this out go to the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
Click on Soldiers and do a search for Magbie, Magbee or any other surname that you are researching.
