This message is for Kim
Magbie who emailed me back in January. I am related to you. Your grandfather and my grandfather were first cousins. Your grandfather Lloyd Hugh
Magbie was raised by my greatgrandfather John
Magbie. Your grandfather's mother was Lillie
Belle Magbie Durrer or Durrogh. She died in 1919, possibly of the
Spanish flu, and she is buried in Glkenwood cemetary in Ft. Payne. Great granddad and his wife nancy raised her 3 boys after her death. They migrated from Ft. Payne
Ala. to
Cleveland,
Ohio about 1917. Great grandad(your great great grandad) was in his late 60s at the time he came to
Cleveland with your grandfather. I interviewed your grandfathers youngest brother Thomas shortly before his death 2 years ago. Thomas was a gifted artist and an inventor. He said that your grandfather's brother Robert died of cancer in 1928, he was an electrician by trade. He also said that your grandfather Hugh was an exellent athlete in high school. Great granddad sent him to
Wilberforce University in
Wilberforce,
Ohio for one year, before he died. John
Magbie died in 1931 and is buried in Highlandview cemetary in an unmarked grave. Your family owes a great debt to this man who migrated in his old age in order to give his grandsons a chance for an education outside of the Jim
Crow South.
Please post a message on the magbie message board or email me directly.
