Beverly, I am researching the family surname of "MAGBY" from Chambers County, Alabama. Your post indicates that you have information re: the Magbies of Ft. Payne, Al & Chambers County, Ga. Some of the MAGBY Ancestors I am actively researching include: Oliver (abt 1870)& Lee, William, Will, Henry, J.C.(abt 1890); etc.; etc. I am also interested in a John MAGBY of Coweta County, Ga (which I believe is Newnan, Ga.) Any information you can provide would be most appreciated. Thanks!

MAGBY -- St. Clair AL, spelling variations

Hi,

I'm researching Magby in the St Clair AL area among others, are you restricting your search to just the Magbie spelling or are you using all of the variations? The reason I ask is that I was searching for my ggg grandfather with the spelling Megabee and getting no where. When I finally realized that it was a variation of McBee, I started finding family all over the place.

Yes, I'm very interested. I also found Magby in St Clair Co AL, who in all likelihood are related, (I'm looking for some verification right now). We should definitely swap info. I'll email you with what I have and suspect.

Dear Jean, (from biy@netzero.net)
I sent a message before, but I don't know what happened to it. Please include your email address next time. Yes, I have done extensive research on my own family in Chambers Co., Ala, near Layfayette Ala., and in Dekalb co., Ft. Payne.
I found my greatgreat grandfather Jacob, and his wife Janie in the 1870 census in Chambers Co. Listed with him are my great grandfather John who was 18 at the time and his brothers and sisters. I also found the family in the census of 1880 with Janie as the head of household, and my great grandfather john had his own residence with his wife and 3 small children, one of whom was my grandfather. In 1880 both Janie and her son have changed the spelling from Magbee to Magbie, and the spelling remains Magbie until this day with the exception of 1900 when it appears in the census as Magby in Dekalb County. I was intrigued because you said your John had brothers named Will, and Henry, so did mine. Henry is 12 in 1870 and william is 6. There is also a sister Elana, age 16, a brother Gus, 14, and Susan, 9 years. Susan is the onIy one of great grandad's siblings that I could find later. She is found in the 1910 census in Ft. Payne ala., married to Perry Orr. My aunt remembered her and told me the name of her husband. She also remembered her great uncle Will. She said he was lightskinned , had curly hair, and that he had a child by a woman in Fort Payne to whom he was not married. In the census of 1880 Janie has 3 more children Sarah, 11; Thom, 9: and Frank, age 5. I don't know what happened to them. According to my aunt, who is 90 years old, her great uncle Thom went to Oklahoma and took his mother Janie with him. Apparently, this move took place sometime between 1890 and 1910. Thom left Oklahoma and eventually came back east.

Dear Ali,
I replied to one of your messages before. But at the time I did not realize that your were Caucasian. I do have some information on Rebecca Magbee, and William L. Magbee of Chambers County that may be of interest to you. Bev Yaman

There is a John Magby in the census of 1870 in Chambers County, ala. I can't tell you if he was white or black. I had taken some notes of other magbies at the time that I located my GGgrandad and found this note to myself.

Hello,

I am also looking for information about William Magbee/Magby. I am Black but I have reason to believe that William L may have been my first White ancestor. I am descended from a mulatto man named William Magby (b. 1825) who was married to Catherine. William had a son named Chris Magby who during the 1910's owned about 3,000 acres in the area of what is now Texas, Alabama. We dont know how Chris was able to amass that much land but we believe that atleast some of it may have been passed down by William through his White slave owning father who we think may have been Wiliam L Magbee. Chris unfortunately was murdered and his land stolen but I am thinking that the event may have been so sensational in the area that other Magby/Magbee/McBees might have taken notice.

If any of this information sounds familiar please let me know.
