An old lady, who lived in Vejle, Denmark tolled me that the name MAACK come from one of the small islands of the german/dutch westcoast(northsea) but I do not remember the name of the island. So we much all be family in some way.

Felicidades.

I´ve got informations that our name come exactly from Denmark or Germany, (when you look in the history of nothern germany, you can see, that it belongs sometimes to denmark or sometimes to germany) probably from an island. The meaning of our name is: a guardian which protect a part of the country or a border. (in german: Part of the country = "Mark"). Furthermore we have got a heraldic shield, for more information, please contact me.. stoebi8679@yahoo.de /

Surnames: Maack, Helmich
Thank you for you information re: the origins of the name Maack. I am trying to go back further on my 3rd great-grandfathers line. HIs name was George Will Frederick Maack born 12 April Hamburgh Germany Arrived in Philadelphia Penn 1830 , Died 5 November 1891, Married to Catherina Elsabein Helmich born 1 Jan 1804 Prussia (according to US Census) I have a copy of the first page of Catherina's bible. Under her name it says Bauerfhaft, Westerberg, and the date is 13 Jannuar 1821. I was wondering if you know where where this place is now?
Maybe some of this info will be helpful to others

I´ve got this information because an heraldic association contact me once. And they only contact me because of the reason that our family has got a heraldic shield in the national database. Westerberg is a location in the near of the city Osnabrück. It is in the north-west of Germany. The word "Bauerfhaft says nothing to me. But "bauer" has got the same meaning as the englisch word "farmer". I think there is also a mistake in the word "bauerfhaft", probably it is "bauerhaft". But whether it is not a german word or location. Yours faithfully Stephanie Maack
