Suggest you print this, its 3 Pages in Word

Nancy Lyver Boyle
Patricia Aylen (Lyver)

Hi Cousins , Here are my thoughts on how to share data and where to go from here.

A. Stuff to share.
With the advent of the tree which Mary obtained, many questions will be answered on the Newfoundland, branch, but Mary needs to get it into something that can be added to and printed.
The tree in RodÂ’s possession will close some more gaps. (Unless of course it is the same one.)
Kelly, has also mentioned a collection of 2000 individuals, which we need to share.

The tree which Pat Aylen (nee) Lyver and myself have constructed, covers one branch in the UK, One branch in the USA, and the other branch of Aust and New Zealand. (about 700 individuals). In addition there are about another 500 Lyver/Liver names in the UK which we hope to put into families and link to the existing Lyver/Liver families in the UK and elsewhere.

B.Aims.
The goal of Pat and myself is to trace our direct lines as far back as possible, and also link all the current Lyvers worldwide (subject to interest and permissions). We have the oldest UK census and we are working backwards and forwards from that point.

IÂ’am also currently researching the origins and checking all references to the name Liver
The reasons and occurrences of name spelling changes of Lyver/Liver

The ultimate aim would be to put it all together on a Web site which would have family password access, and have interested family members could look after their own branches, being able to add other branches from the Female sides and any related stuff they wanted. Meantime, until we get to that point.

C. Suggestion.
To be able to share data in tree form. I think the best way is for everyone to have individual (but the same) genealogy software, Versus using one of the ‘on line” tree sites such as on this site.
The reason for this approach is that while the sites are OK (I have tried out 3 of them)
· They are all limited in the data which you can input and display on various events,
· the reporting options available are also limited.
· They use either a Pedigree chart or a waterfall chart when what everyone is used to is a top down descendant chart.
· They would be quite hard to navigate with a big tree, as you cant see which way you are going in the tree.
· Each of you interested, would need to stick to strict inputting rules, to maintain the data integrity
· It would be harder to add everyone’s mothers and (Grandmothers etc) side.
· When you are working with this stuff its annoying when your ISP disconnects you in the middle of something.
· The features and facilities on these sites are not really enough for serious genealogy.
· And finally, I am personally a bit reluctant to post to a searchable public site, I have had some backlash from other family members who don’t want detail of their children published.

I have been using a package from Sierra called Generations, but its quite expensive. BUT
There is available from the LDS site a reasonable package and it is FREE. Its called Personal Ancestral file (PAF 4.0)
Suggest you download it and have a look.
Located at http://www.ldscatalog.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/LDS/p...
I have Exported the data out of my package in a Gedcom file and it went straight into the PAF. And everything looked good.

Info on the package itself and also Gedcom transfer format is here if you havenÂ’t looked at genealogy software before.
http://genealogy.about.com/hobbies/genealogy/gi/dynamic/offs...

If anyone is already using some other package then its most probable that you can import and export Gedcom files anyway, so no need to change.

Gedcom files are easy to load and are small and easy to send regularly to each other via Email

The transfer and sharing of unsorted data (like I assume that Kelly has with 2000 names) can be done with normal software, Word, Excel etc via Email.

As I said, this is a suggestion only, If someone has some more thoughts then yell out.

If everyone agrees then we could proceed as follows:

D. Method

Everyone download the software and have a look, key in some of your immediate family to get the feel of it.

· When you have done that, Email me John.Lyver@Xtra.co.nz and I will Email you back with My Gedcom file. Which covers areas said previously.
· I will also load the starting data from Mary’s Posting just to give you a start.
· Mary should then use the PAF to enter the remainder of any data not written down in her posting.
· Everyone can then enter all your own known history and families into your own PAF
· By that time, Rod should have found his tree, or else sent it to me, and either he or I can enter the detail from that one.
· Then as each one partially completes their own tree (its never done fully) they can Email it to us all.
· There will be lots of crossovers in the data as you are all closely related, and after the first pass when all the detail from all sources within each family is combined there will need to be a point where one version is produced then that version is used by everyone to then continue how they wish.
· When I mail out my Gedcom file I will send suggestions on how to deal with gaps and how to link other trees etc.
· Any data (e.g. Kelly) on Lyvers who do not at this stage link to yourself or others in this group need to be treated as a separate file.(s)
· Finally, we need to decide how and when to use the message board on this site.

ThatÂ’s about everything I can think off at this stage, I must say that this is very exciting for me (In a sort of Genealogical way) there has only been Pat in the UK and myself in NZ who have been working off and on about who we are and where we came from, so to have six others interested is wonderful.

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to try and come up with a solution for everyone that would make some progress.

Regards

John Lyver
