Hi, Have just seen this Lythe posting from 2010. I am researching my Lyth family and have access to the Shropshire Archives at Shrewsbury.
Are you certain that your William Lythe moved to Ellesmere from Yorkshire? Did he have family ties there?
There is a pocket of Lyth/Lythe/Lithe names around Ellesmere, Shropshire possibly because of the township of Birch & Lyth close to Ellesmere. There is still a house called "The Lyth" which in the past was "Lyth Hall". I have found early records; 1489, Richard Lyth of Lyth, and 1544, Richard Lyth of Lyth. In the Genealogy of Shropshire by Joseph Morris, a Jane Lyth of the Lyth (sic) b 1570, daughter of Thomas Lyth of the Lyth (sic) b 1530 marries into the noble Hanmer family, namely Randel Hanmer of Hanmer, Flintshire.
Hanmer, Flint, Wales is only 4 miles from Ellesmere, Shropshire. There are numerous Lyths from Ellesmere, also Wem & Edstaston, Cotton etc; surrounding villages in Shropshire. I am aware that there is a northern version of Lyth but wondered if you have assumed that the two are linked.
Happy to discuss this with you if you are still "live" on Ancestry!
Regards,
David
