Hi Clare,
Not sure if you are still out there researching the family but have just come across your post. My grandfather was Robert Alexander Lympany, Uncle to Walter.
Theories regarding the surname abound, but it appears to be linked to the Gaelic, Celtic and then an old English spelling of Elm and seems to be associated with "the river where elms grow". There is a place called Lympne in Kent which seems to have this origin but according to most of the available sources, there have never been any Lympanys by surname recorded there. From what I have deduced to date, there were two branches of Lympanys - with slightly different spelling evolutions. "our" branch originated in Devon and Cornwall and "the other" branch originated in London. There is an apparent link to John or Johannes, Lord Mayor of Exeter in the 16th Century I believe, but I have not been able to work backwards to get the link from Thomas Lympany who died in or around Uffculme in 1746.
