Howard, N.Y. — Mildred Mae Wright Lyke, 98, of Howard, passed away late Thursday evening (June 20, 2013) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
Born in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 30, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin DeLong and Hilda Mae Olmstead Wright.
A graduate of Lincoln High School in 1932,
Mildred came to Howard with her parents in 1933 and was married to Alvaro H. Lyke of Howard on Dec. 25, 1934; the couple was blessed with two daughters and two sons. Mr. Lyke was a prominent farmer of the area and he predeceased her on July 7, 1991 after nearly 57 years of marriage.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her daughter, Bonita “Bonnie” Lyke; her grandson, Rick Lewis; her three brothers, Vernon, Ronald and Judson Wright; and her two sisters, Emily Wright and Dorothy Leahy.
Her surviving family includes her daughter, Sondra Brown and son-in-law, Harold of Howard; her son, Richard Alvaro Lyke of Avoca; and her son, Gordon Benjamin Lyke and daughter-in-law, Linda of Howard; her 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Julia Millsap of Moreno Valley, Calif.; also her nieces and nephews.
In 1945, Mildred joined the Howard Union Church, where she served as an elder. She was also a longtime member of the Howard Eastern Star, joining in 1935; she served as a Past Patron three times and in 1971 she served as the Steuben County District Deputy of the Eastern Star of the State of New York. She was also the Town of Howard Historian from 1975-1986 and was a Past Regent of the Kanisteo Valley Daughters of the American Revolution.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca. Friends are invited to meet her family at the Howard Union Church where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Pastor Don Lester officiating.
Committal services and interment will follow at the Howard Cemetery.
Following the services at the cemetery everyone is invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Howard Fire Hall.
