Lowell, Mass. —Reverend Daniel Francis Lyddy, 92, died on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, N.H. He bad been a resident at Greenbryer Nursing Home in Nashua.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Lowell, Mass., on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be held at Mahoney’s Funeral Home in Lowell on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, from 3 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Lowell. Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Ogdensburg, will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Father Lyddy at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Schroon Lake, N.Y., on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at 4 p.m.
Father Lyddy was born in Lowell, Mass., on May 18, 1910, the son of the late Austin and Mary (Finnegan) Lyddy. After receiving his early education at local schools, he graduated from Lowell High School in 1926. Father Lyddy attended Canisius College in Buffalo for one year before entering the novitiate of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Tewksbury, Mass. As a professed Oblate of Mary Immaculate, he continued his studies for the priesthood at the Oblate House of Philosophy in Newburgh, N.Y., and at the Oblate Scholasticate in Washington, DC, where he earned an STB degree in 1934. On June 12, 1934, Father Lyddy was ordained to the priesthood at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC by Bishop John J. McNamara, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore.
For the next three years, the newly ordained priest taught at the Holy Rosary Scholasticate in Ottawa, Ontario, and at the Oblate Novitiate House of Philosophy in Newburgh. In 1937, Father Lyddy began ministry in the Diocese of Ogdensburg as assistant pastor at St. John Bosco Church in Malone. In 1939, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Ogdensburg.
Father Lyddy then served several parishes in the North Country as assistant pastor: St. Patrick’s in Port Henry, St. Mary’s in Massena, Saint Andrew’s in Norwood, St. Patrick’s in Hogansburg and Notre Dame in Malone. In 1947, Father Lyddy was named administrator and then in 1950 pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Schroon Lake and the mission church of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in North Hudson. In 1955, Father Lyddy was appointed pastor of St. James Minor Church in Cadyville, where he served for 13 years until being named pastor of St. Martin’s in Port Leyden and St. John's in Lyons Falls. In 1975, he returned to Schroon Lake as pastor and served there until his retirement from active priestly ministry. He was named pastor emeritus of the parish in 1984.
During his priesthood, Father Lyddy held several diocesan appointments. From 1974 to 1977 he served as Diocesan Consultor and Dean of Lewis Deanery. Father also served as a representative to the Senate of Priests. In addition, Father served as Dean of Essex Deanery from 1980 until his retirement.
Survivors include five nieces and nephews; Austin Lyddy III of Port Charlotte, Fla., Patricia Nichols of Lowell, Robert D. Lyddy of Nashua, Cheryl E. Stafford-Rogers of Hudson, N.H., and Denise M. Lyddy of Nashua; and many grandnieces, grandnephews; and great - grandnieces and great - grandnephews. Father Lyddy was also the brother of the late Austin A. Lyddy, Jr., and a sister, Mary Rita.
