Hi there J.Batten,

I've done some work on Annie for the HFA (Harriman Family Association) and would like to correspond with you but in private - if you are still out there looking for some info! I have theories but hate to publish them in public as once something gets out on the 'net, it seems like it becomes fact. How do we go about that? If you go to the Harriman Family Association website, you will find my email (click on officers and then on Publications Chair and Family Archivist) if you want to reply via private email. Not sure I am supposed to post links or email addresses here... Sue

Hi Jan, I have a book by Dorothy Womack on the Lybrook family. It was published in 200 by SPG Graphics, PO Box 68679 Indianapolis IN 46268. You can see a copy at the DAR library in DC. My husband is a direct descendant of Baltzer/Balser Lybrook, who served in the American Revolution. I believe Henry and Phillip Lybrook both served in the Civil War. There is a story about an indian massacre that involved the Lybrooks and it was made into a bookand movie called "Follow the River". I found no Anne/Annie or Shank's listed int he book, so you migt try to get in touch with Dorothy. She is often on the Fayette Co, PA messaage board, to see if your ancestor fits in this family. It sounds like she might. Good luck, Nora

None. Her children didn't know. Her neighbors apparently didn't. In the 1920 census, she said was separated from them by the Civil War. A letter from her alleged brother was not kept. She told one of her grandchildren that her mother was a full-blooded Indian -- but never mentioned her mother's name or the tribe she supposedly belonged to. Mysterious. Puzzling.

Looking for Lybrook in Ohio 1855

I'm looking for a Lybrook who would have been in Ohio (Cincinnati or Cleveland) in August 1855. May have been married to a woman of Indian heritage.

My great-grandmother Annie or Anna Lybrook b. 8/9/1855 Ohio. Probably a brick wall, but I'm looking for her parents. She stated in the 1920 census that she lost her parents due to the Civil War. And there are no family records that indicate her father or mother's name. Only a statement that she supposedly made to a grandchild that her mother was a full-blood Indian (no tribe mentioned). Annie was around 5-6 (maybe younger) when she was separated from her parents -- so she may not have known??

She became a foster child of John and Nan Stewart in Warsaw, Missouri in the early 1860's. Family legends vary but one states that she was found on a river bank of the Osage River near Warsaw, Missouri when she was between ages of 5-10. She may have been travelling with a family named Shanks when an accident occurred that resulted in the death of one or more of the party she was travelling with -- possibly including her brother. Family tradition says that her father was German and had served in the Civil War; that her mother was of American Indian origin. I have no proven facts about her parents except that they were in Ohio when Annie was borned. It is possible that her brother was not drowned as Annie believed for she received a letter in 1924 from the St. Louis area from a person who said he was her brother. She didn't respond to the letter.

Parents of Anna Lybrook

Anna Lybrook was born in 1855 in or around Cleveland, OH. Her mother may have died around 1860. Her father served in the Civil War. He apparently sent Annie and her brother westward with a family named Shanks. When they got to the Osage River near Warsaw, MO, they either met with foul play or an accident and Mrs. Shanks and Annie's brother (maybe) drown. Mr. Shanks apparently abandoned Annie on the riverbank. She eventually lived as a foster child of John and Nan Stewart. I have never found any references in family history of Annie's father's name. She named her sons -- John James and Robert Junior.
