Lybrands with roots in Arkansas

My father's name was Civil. His siblings were Clovis (Jack), Elsie, Birdie May and Thomas. I have relatives still residing in New Mexico (Jack's children). I know my grandfather's name was Jake and he was born in Arkansas. There are a lot of holes in my father's side of the line that perhaps some of you can help me fill in. I believe my grandmother Ida was of part Cherokee descent. According to my father, our name was originally spelled as Lybrandt (or something like that), making it French and not German. He always insisted the Lybrands were French, not German! I am anxious to hear some replies to that one! : )
