Searching for any info on George Frank Lyall, living in Devon (Exeter and Plymouth) 1930s-1961

I am looking to take my research a step further. I have recently discovered that my grandfather, George Frank Lyall, lived at an address in St Thomas, Exeter in 1937. By 1938 he was living in Woking. However, I know that he died in Plymouth in 1961. I suspect he spent much of his life in Devon and only went to Woking perhaps for work. He was employed with Rubroid roofing up to 1937/38 and worked on the restoration of Buckfast Abbey, which is why I believe he was subsequently out of work. I believe he was born in 1883 although I have also found info that implies he was either born or was christened in 1886. I have currently no knowledge of what he did nor where he was between 1938 and 1961 and would love to find out more about him. I have recently found two photos I believe to be of him, but have no scanner so cannot upload them onto here.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I also wonder why he came back to Devon having maybe found a bit of work in Woking in the meantime. Plymouth is a large place in which to track down even a Lyall, but I would like to find out any info about his time in Plymouth.
