Hi
Captain William Lyall of the Inflexible was born 5 November 1827 in Montrose, Angus shire. He was the son of George Lyall and Margaret Craik. His next brother, John Craik Lyall was my gg grandfather. William's widow, Magdalene Smith Lyall, moved to Australia in early 1880's and was given land by John Lyall who was a landholder and dairyman in Balmain. He later moved to Leichhardt and Lyall street was named for the family when the dairy was subdivided.Another of the Lyall siblings also came to Australia, their sister Isabella. Unfortunately, none of the males in the family survived, so he name Lyall was lost as a surnam ein the family but most of the females passed it on as a first or middle name to their children.
Captain Lyall made regular trips to New Zealand. He also captained a ship called the Memento and there are some interesting reports in old New Zealand newspapers that make reference to him.
Regards
Wendy
The Inflexible was lost at sea in about July 1871 with all hands lost. It was on a trip from India to America.
