The English family name Lusby is classified as being of habitation origin. When family names are defined as ‘habitation’ in origin, they refer us to the residence or home or home of the progenitor or founder of the family. The name may tell us that the residence was located in a particular town or village or that it was located by some distinguishing geographical feature.

In this case, the surname Lusby is derived from the place name Lusby located in Lincolnshire, England. Thus the original bearer of the name was known by members of the community as ‘one from Lusby.’

This place name was recorded as ‘Luzebi’ in the 1086 (Domesday Book). It is derived from the old Scandinavian personal name of “Lutr” and the Old Danish Viking word “by” farmstead or village. As Stan Lusby from Otago says “by laws” meaning town laws so the original meaning would be “Lutr’s farmstead or village.”

According to the Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, by Bardely, “The name Lusby was given to the people who came from a town, Lusby, in the county of Lincoln, England. The town in 1833 had 140 inhabitants and was located 5 miles west northwest of Spilsby. The village of Lusby has always been a predominantly agricultural settlement. There was a rectory, in the arch-deaconry diocese of Lincoln, rated in the king’s book at 8.14 lbs. and in the patronage of R. C.Blackenbury, Esq.
