Kirk Patrick Ludington

Hello,
I am looking for info on Kirk Patrick Ludington of Hull, Quebec. According to the census and his CEF attestation papers he was born in 1890 in Phoenix, NY and moved to Canada in 1891. He married Gertrude Sarah Elizabeth Stanley of Osgoode, Ont. on June 29, 1926.

He is not to be confused with another man with the exact same name born in 1917 who married a Jean Cairns and is buried in Aylmer, Quebec (died 1969).

I would like to find his date of death.

I am looking for photo of Linus Shepard Ludington who served in the Civil War under the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillary. Linus befriended my gr-gr-gr uncle Gilbert L. Mixter who served in the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry and died in the Andersonville Prison. What I believe was a means to commemorate their friendship, Linus kept a note in his wallet stating Gilbert's passing at the prison. I am trying to learn more on how these two men met and would like to associate faces with the men. Thanks.

Please note that Clarissa Colwell was married to Ashby Jewett (not Ashley Jewell as reported here). They had one child, Frances Emily (also called Emily Francis) before Ashby died in Cold Spring New York in 1828. He was buried in the Old Cold Spring Cemetery in Putnam County New York and Clarissa and the baby moved to New York City shortly after Ashby's death. She died there 40 years later.

Thom, If Mary was married to a COLWELL, it was not her sister Anne's husband. Joseph Colwell who married Anne Ludington died in New York City in Oct 1829 and was buried in the St. Johns burying ground of Trinity Church in New York as was Anne when she died in Dec 1833. Their remains were later moved to Green-Wood cemetery in Brooklyn to a plot owned by their son Lewis.

Hi,
Thank you for the additional info. I am positive that this John A. Ludington was my grandmother's husband. Adel Sanchez is the same name as my grandmother. Further, if this Mr. Ludington died in Wyoming, where my grandmothers' and her family lived, it is too coincidental. Also, my grandmother adopted my cousin who was orphaned. I will try again to contact Bugler103@comcastnet. I sent 1 message, however, it was returned as inactive. Marie.

They may have moved (or at least Dora moved) to the Civil District 7, Giles, TN area. In the 1900 census that is Dora location and she is listed as widowed with 5 living children.

Any information would be greatly appreciate. Thank you for your time.
My father is Steven Ludington Hammer, son of Helen Ludington Hammer - of Muncie, IN - years ago. Helen (my grandmother) told me when I was a child that I was eligible to be in the D.A.R. - due to our family's link to Sybil Ludington. I never did any research, but would love to know more details of that link... why? My daughter just did a report on the revolutionary war and just read an article on Sybil Ludington -- history came alive in my daughter's eyes!
Thanks - LConstand@aol.com

Hi Gayle,
Thanks for your infomation in your posting. I have not been doing much geneolgy searching recently as hadn't found anything new for some time. Do you have an email address that i could contact you directly?
I have posted several of the photos of Ludingtons, Eldridges and Winchells at both ancientfaces.com and deadfred.com.
The Winchell/Ludington connections seem to be many. Phoebe Winchell m. Lyman Eldridge whose son S. W. Eldridge built the Eldridge House which I believe later sold to Reuben Winchell Ludington, s. of Villity and Henry Ludington. I also believe that Eunice Winchell was m. to Reuben Winchell Ludington.
I am having problems with my computer right now and am unable to retrieve more information for you right now. There is a guy, Matt Yancey who has, as far as my line and information goes, very accurate information. If you type in the rootsweb search box, Geroge Herbert Winchell, my grandfather, and look for matt as the poster, you can view his index and decendency lines.
My email address is highwayone01@yahoo.com.
My ggrandfather, George Herbert Winchell was born in Lawrence. KS and I believe there are several Winchell's living there, though I don't know how we are connected.
I have not found any White connection though the back of the picture says, "Great Grandfather White...."
Lori

According to the Ludington genealogy given in:

Charles Smith and Rachel Amy Bryant : their ancestors and descendants. Smith, Tenney. Brattleboro, Vt.: Vermont Print. Co., 1938, p. 204.

Ame [sic?] Ludington, b. Mar 14, 1778. m. Joseph Colwell

but also note her sister Mary:

Mary Ludington, b. July 31, 1765, m. 1st, Sep. 12, 1785, David Travis. m. 2nd, Colwell. m. 3rd, Gilbert.

From their sister Sibyl (Ludington)Ogden's pension application, we know that Mary's third marriage was to the Rev. Asahel Gilbert, who is known to have been in Troy, Rensselaer Co, in 1835, and must have married Mary before her affidavit of 1838, when she is in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co, NY.

So I'm wondering if Mary Ludington might have married secondly her late sister's husband, that sort of thing being not uncommon.

Do you have evidence of Joseph Cowell's whereabouts, or any information that might bear on this theory?

It's surprising that after all this time that Sybil (Ludington) Ogden's testimony from her husband's Revolutionary War pension application hasn't been published, as far as I can tell.

The only clue to his ancestry in that file is that he enlisted at Weston, Fairfield Co, CT in Apr 1776. She states they were married 24 Oct 1784 and that he died 16 Sep 1799. An affidavit by her sister Mary indicates that the marriage occurred in what is now Patterson, Putnam Co, NY [then Frederickstown, Dutchess Co] by Rev. Ebenezer Cole of the Baptist Church there, and that Edmund Ogden died of yellow fever in New York City, though she thought he died after 1800.

If you'd like the full pension file, contact me at:
thom.carlson@stanfordalumni.org

I'm interested in her sister Mary, said to have married David Travis, but identified in her affidavit of 1838 as the wife of Rev. Asahel Gilbert, then of Poughkeepsie. This seems to be Asahel Gilbert, b. 1760 Hebron, CT; also a Rev. vet, who first married Anna Goodrich. Sometime after she died he became a Methodist exhorter, inspired by Lorenzo Dow. He died in Galesburg, Knox Co, IL, the only Revolutionary veteran buried in that county.

I'd appreciate any information about Mary (Ludington)Travis.

Thanks so much for all your help, Barb. I am not on the Ludington list, but I would like to be. My father, Martin Ludington, died two years ago and left me all his ancestral research. I am trying to finish where he left off. I do have our family tree (with a generational skip as I do not know which of the three brothers Corbett descended from) online. It is at www.LudingtonSheppardFamily.com. I can trace back to the same William as you. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and the Gay Ludington Ron mentioned is my second cousin. I did not know she was also doing family research so that was a great tip.

Thank you again.

Anne C. Ludington

Hi there thanks for replying. I have two brothers Abner and Comfort Luddington who married the same Anna Holdcroft /Hollcraft,spelled several ways. She married Comfort first and about a year later he dissapears . I can't find any death record for him. She then married the younger brother who was so young she had to get his mothers permission to marry her. She was older. Can you tell me anything other themn that? I have both wedding dates but thats about it. Thanks, Barb
