Surnames: Lucas - Carroll - Bracken - Johnson/McShane
I had no idea that Johanna Lucas was of French Huguenot descent until I read your post! Any information that you can share with me about her ancestry would be greatly appreciated! My only knowledge of Johanna Lucas begins with her emigration to the U.S. I am not sure at which port they arrived but they ultimately ended up in Pittsburgh, PA.
I don't have detailed information about Michael Carroll, just Johanna.

I have information about Johanna that was written down in the 1970s when my grandmother recorded the memories of her mother, Mary Catherine Bracken Johnson. Mary C.B. Johnson was the granddaughter of Johanna Lucas Carroll. Here is the information that she provided:

Johanna Lucas was born in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland and married Michael Carroll. Their oldest daughter Annie was born in Ireland and during the time of the potato famine they emigrated to America. It was probably about 1854 when "Grandma Carroll" left Ireland to find a better world in America. Johanna and Michael and their small daughter eventually migrated west and settled in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Mary C.B. Johnson's earliest memories of Johanna were as a widow living with "Auntie Jones" (This is a reference to Johanna Carroll's daughter Bridget "Aunt Bid" or "Auntie Jones" who married John Jones.)
As a little girl Mary C.B. Johnson remembers her as an elderly, quiet lady sitting with her knitting or crocheting making stockings out of rough wool and sewing squares of velvet into quilts.

I have quite a bit more descriptive information about Johanna Carroll through her granddaughter Mary C.B. Johnson's memories and lots of details about their lives and those of the extended family in Pittsburgh which I can share with you if you'd like. Mary C.B. Johnson died in 1979 when I was five years old. She was actually living at my grandmother's house in Pittsburgh for several years before she died and I and my mother and brother were also living there at the same time. But of course, she never personally shared these memories with me. So, I am so grateful that they were written down before she died.

Here are the names of the children of Johanna Lucas and Michael Carroll:

1)Annie who married James Mills
2)James who never married
3)Elmer who never married
4)Raymond who never married
5)Johanna who married Patrick Duffy
6)Bessie who married Robert McChesney
7)Laura who married _ McCabe
8)Bridget who married John Jones
9)Alice who married Rodger O'Mara
10) Mary who married John Henry Bracken - These are my great-great grandparents and the parents of Mary C.B. Johnson from whom the memories of "Grandma Carroll" were recorded.

The children of (#8) Bridget Jones and John Jones are:
1) Johanna who married Frank O'Connell (Their only grandson was Edward who was an artist.)
2) Edward never married
3) William never married

The children of (#9) Alice and Rodger O'Mara are:
1) Johanna who married Dr. McGuire (dentist)
2) Alice who married Ralph Bast (had two children, Jane and Mary Alice)
3) Katherine "Kit" who married Roger Werner (had two children, Roger and Margaret)
4) Martin who died young
5) Jane who married Vincent Corrigan (had two children, Jane and Vincent)

The children of (#10) Mary and John Henry Bracken are:

1) Johanna who died at age 19 of T.B.
2) Mary Catherine who married John T. (McShane) Johnson
(This is "Mary C.B. Johnson", my great-grandmother - They had seven children: Mary Louise, Bracken, Ruth, Audrey, Martha, Sara, and Marjorie Jane)
3) Irene who died at age 16 of T.B.

Mary C.B. Johnson stated that Johanna Carroll died when she was 68 of pneumonia when she was visiting "Aunt Annie".
I don't have specific years for her birth and death, however.

I wasn't sure how much you know about their lives in America but I can probably answer some of your questions. How are you related to Johanna Lucas and Michael Carroll? Let's see... for me they are my ggg grandparents. I saw in your post that your father and grandfather handed down the Lucas history to you. Could you please share some more details with me. I can't wait to find out more! Thanks so much.
