When I found Cornelius' and Anna's marriage license and saw the first name Tonejes I asked my grandmother about her dad having a first name. She was adament that he only had one name and that was Cornelius. Of course she was wrong, but evidently nobody in the family ever called him anything but Cornelius. I also have been in contact with people who felt that possibly the last name was Tonejes and it was changed when they came to America. There is also the possiblity that it was a name of a close friend whom they honored. There are some Tonejes' in the area where they settled. In Grandpa's obit it states that he came to America with his parents when he was 8 years of age and that he returned to Germany for a visit when he was 21. But then again this is what the relatives all thought. I have never found any ship records of the family arriving and I have searched extensively. Of course new transcripts are being done daily, so maybe some day! There is a record of a Cornelius Eiben 22 who came on the Ship Trave on 1 Mar 1889 and arrived in NY. It came from Bremen Germany and Southampton England. This fits with the obit stating that he went back when he was 21. Did you realize that there were 2 children who died and did not make the trip from Germany? If you have any questions I would be glad to try and help.
