All the different Lowrey spellings including lowry are related, and we have a few with Mc starting the last names, like we have to find the exact clans....I can tell you on one of the family trees, I found a long distance cousin that had the tree and the names, even the pic of the ship our family came over on....I have temporarily misplaced my papers from moving, but it can be found I believe on Myfamilytree.com. I will start looking again as I was hooked up with her and the information.

The Rev J W S Lowry left quite a trail of written documentation. It took me a while to figure out his parentage. I now believe he was the son of Helen Lowry (who was a daughter of Rev Joseph Lowry from Lissara, Kilmore, County Down) & who married a William Lowry, who was a grocer in Crossgar.
Kirsten, I would like to find out more about the John Lowry who was a friend of your gggrandfather & where they settled.
You can respond directly to me at deved@rogers.com if you wish.
Thank you,
Ken
Thanks, everyone, for sorting out the various Rev. Lowrys.

Rev. Thomas Lowry who married Florella Reid had another daughter named Florella after the elder Florella died in 1850. Her name was Florella Sophia Gilbert Lowry, born in 1853 in Canada.

On the 1861 Canada census the family was living in Whitby, Ontario. Children Mary Ann, age 17 born in Ireland, John , age 15 born in Ireland, Florella, age 7, born in Canada, Anna Louisa, age 5, born in Canada.

John died age 19 in Milverton, Ontario. Mary Ann married James Whaley. Florella married David Morice , Anna Louise married William Williamson.

Theobald_Ken posted that Thomas may have had a son who became a missionary in the Ottawa Valley. Would that have been John or another son?

Rev. Lowry held pastorates in Barrie, Bradford, Whitby, Milverton & Brantford, Ontario. He retired in 1881 but continued to preach in Toronto. Florella (wife of Rev. Thomas) died in 1883, Thomas died in 1892. Both buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Milverton, Ontario.
http://www.geneofun.on.ca/names/photo/1695774
http://www.geneofun.on.ca/names/photo/1695775

I'm not related to the Lowrys. Rev. Thomas was my ancestors' minister so the name "Thomas Lowry" was used as given names to honour him. My gggrandfather came from Co. Down (near Lisburn) with his boyhood friend, John Lowry, who had a son, Rev. J.W.S. Lowry of Toronto. I've always wondered if there is any connection.

Kirsten

Hi,
I realize that this post is now 16 years old, but I figured I'd give it a try. Was your great Grandfather Lafayette the writer of story called the History of the Lowry Family that was donated to the Genealogical Society Library by Willis and Ruth Lowry. If so, I'd like to exchange some information with you. My line is through Alexander lowry, son of James lowry boorn in Pittsburg, and moving to Jefferson County Ohio.
Thanks,
Dan

Franz Siegel (or Sergil or Seigel) Lowry, often call "Frank", was born in 1862 or 1863 in Clark County Illinois to Eliza Ann Sweet and Jackson Lowry. I have two questions.

1. It is often claimed that he married an Allie Tingley on 6 Jan 1889 in Clark County. I believe this to be incorrect and would like to know a source for this.

2. I would be very interested in corresponding with anyone about Franz's disappearance and death in or around 1917, possibly in Illinois.

Hi, JD!

My grandmother (Eliza Mae Lowery Hamilton) was a Cumberland, MD Lowery. Actually she was born in Mt. Savage, but graduated from Allegany High School there in Cumberland. Her father was Melvin Carl Lowery, and she had a bunch of brothers and sisters...Lambert, Arthur, Peter, Clarence, Anna and Emma. I've only extensively researched my direct line, parents to grandparents to grandparents, etc.

Wonder if we are related.

I would like to know the name of Ursula Amanda Lowry's husband. We've been given D F Carnes. She is the daughter of Samuel Dickey Lowry and Rebecca Jane Coons. I have found her in MS thru 1870 and then her family moved to Wise County, TX before the 1880 census. I was unable to find her in 1880. She died in Apr 1898. I found her burial in Find-A-Grave but there is no other Carnes that comes up in that cemetery when I do a search. Do you know if they had any children? Thanks.

Family traditions have a habit of being only partly true.
But to add to the questions in regards to L. S. Lowry my grandfather was Samuel James Heylands Lowry born near Ballymagorry in County Tyrone in 1890. It has always been said that our family is related to the family of L.S Lowry My uncle has mentioned that my Great Grandmother Sarah was in contact with the family in the Nineteenth century.
This is a subjective comment but the images I have seen of L.S. Lowry bear this out insofar as there seems to be a family resemblance between my grandfather and L.S. Lowry.

John..1769-1846..his father was Archilbald Lowry..Donaghmore.co.Down. died 1813..No doubt your John and Jane will be connected..as seems the Rev's stuck together and
marrying of cousins seems likely.Cheers..

Michael,
I am happy to share what I had found on the Lowery/Lowry and Ragan/Reagan connection with you. And, I just want you to be totally aware of the information that I had found from Dr. James Americus Ragan/Reagan's journal. That clue from him had led me to do the investigation about David Lowery and ?Sarah? Ragan/Reagan. So, your David Lowery in Monroe County, Tennessee was the eldest brother-in-law to Dr. James Americus Ragan/Reagan because he was mentioned David Lowery's wife as his own eldest sister who had died before 1847.

So, this David Lowery was the only one that I can find in Monroe County, Tennessee.

NOTE: ?Sarah? Ragan/Reagan who married David Lowery was a direct descendant of Timothy Ragan/Reagan,Sr. of Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

By the way, I made a error in mentioning "Madison County, Tennessee" in that lengthy message. It should be "Monroe County, Tennessee" right after the phrase,"family bible in."

- Donald B. Reagan

I have a marvelous old photo of Edwin Dwight Lowry that I would like to get back to his family. The writing on the back of the photo says his name and "Last picture - 1906 - age 65". The photo was taken in Put-In-Bay (Ottawa Co.) Ohio, and shows him with a mustache and an ankle length coat.

The 1880 census for Oberlin (Lorain Co.) OH shows Edwin D. Lowry at age 36, with wife Arvilla L., 35, daughters Joa (6) and Vileda (2), along with Abigail and Milton Barker, his Mo. in Law and Fa in Law. 1900 Lorain Co. census gives his Nov 1842 birthdate in OH, says he was a house painter and married since 1873 to wife Arvilla L. Lowry.

If you are related to Edwin Dwight Lowry, please email me at margerice@prodigy.net.

It is stated in one of the messages that the wife of Lowry's great grandfatherJacob was Eliza. The 1841 census states it was Margaret. Could this please be clarified?
With regard to Jacob Lowry, the great grandfather stated to have been born in Lancashire around 1776, there is a baptism on 23/8/1772 at Stanwix, Cumberland of a Jacob, son of William Lowry and Mary [probably Robson - the marriage at Stanwix in 1757]. It is not impossible this could be the correct Jacob Lowry despite the stated birthplace in the census.
It is stated the Lowry family originally came from Ireland [I believe the Belfast area] but no specific evidence has been shown and the name is usually northern English or Scottish. Even if the great grandfather's immediate ancestors did come from Ireland, they probably originated in England or Scotland.
Hi Nev, Thanks for getting back to me. My g.g.grandmother was Jane Lowry- sister to Margaret and Eliza and Florella. I've been trying to figure out for years who she was as her name was on an old family gravestone and just found out recently. John Lockhart's 2nd wife was Judith Mason and her mother's surname was Reid - a sister to the Rev John Reid. Their father was James Reid and his family lived at Clonaneese. I think that there is a bit of confusion with names as Florella was actually Florella Reid Lowry and she was the daughter of Rev John Lowry who was minister at Clonaneese. With having 2 surnames maybe she was a stepdaughter of Rev John Lowry. I know that Rev John Reid was minister of Lissara from 1793 (when he was ordained) until 1801 when he went to Drumbanagher Pres Church near Newry where he died 1825. I don't think he was minister at Clonaneese - just that his family came from that congregation. His daughter married Rev William Reid of Scarva (probably a relation! and spawned further Reverends!). I also know that there were Stuarts related to my g grandmother Judith Mason and the Reids -one was a Rev James and the other a Dr William who lived in New York. They were nephews of Rev John Reid and apparently had a portrait of him. It appears that your Stuarts and mine may be the same!!!! If I could find out more about them maybe Judith's parents would be easier to find.
I see you live in Australia. My son and family live near Wollongong. It's a small world really isn't it!!
Olive

Hi, I have read with interest your comment. Rev John Lowry of Clonaneese was father-in-law of my 2nd great grandfather John Lockhart (his 1st wife). John Lockhart's 2nd wife's family also came from Clonaneese and I'm wondering if there was some connection. She was called Judith Mason and all I know about her was that her mother's brother was a Rev John Reid also a Presbyterian minister.(his father was James Reid) Would you happen to have any more information.

Regards
Olive

I am extremely grateful for the info that you have posted here and wonder if you have ever managed to get any further, please?

I have a John Lowry born in Cheshire c.1800 and married to Alice Dobson Taylor in 1835 at Stockport and then residing in Stockport.

It seems to me that the coincidence of surname and place may mean that there is some common root, but I cannot push either back in time any further - I wonder if you or anyone else can help, please?

Many thanks,
Caspar

George & John Lowrey/Lowry Cherokee Indians

Many believe that John Lowrey died in 1817. I've seen books and family trees that have copied this death date. Well the Cherokee John Lowrey couldn't have died in 1817 because I have found Treatys and other documents that are signed by him. Betsy Pack has a legal record in Marion Co, Tn where she names John Lowry in it and the date is 1823. Actually he died in 1849, Hamilton Co, Il.
John Lowry/ Lowrey married Elizabeth Reese, but, no marriage record has been found, but I've seen Trees that say they were married around 1802. John had other children as he states in his Will dtd 1848 but he doesn't give names. I found a Legal Transaction in Coffee Co. Tn. with John, Joseph and George on the same page, however I've not seen what this doc. John had 100 acres on Duck River. The John who is Cherokee was a ferry boat operator, among other things On the 1820 Franklin County, Tn Census there are 4 children around the same ages as Johns children. I think these 4 kids belong to Elizabeth Reese and her first husband. If the woman on this census is even Elizabeth Reese. There are so many mistakes on this family. One is the marriage record that has Charles Lowry marrying Sarah Lowery on 10 Mar 1780 and John is the bondsman. On the actual marriage certificate it has John marrying Sarah and Charles as the bondsman.

hello, i know a little about this family. james lowry jr, mayor of pittsburgh, was my great grandfather David Lowry's older brother. parents were james and mary lowry. there were 12 kids, 9 boys and 3 girls. the only names i know are james jr, joseph (famous engineer), and david (author, newspaper editor and artist and civil war vet). james sr had a furniture factory on 7th ave in pittsburgh pa. they were from either scotland or northern ireland...they were presbyterians. my info comes from Duquesne Post #259, Grand Army of the Republic bulletin of june 15, 1920, when the death of David Lowry was announced. i always thought that my great-great grandfather's name was John, which would be odd because his oldest son was james jr. i still have not resolved this. my grandfather, milton stanley lowry, was disowned for marrying a 25 yrs younger german immigrant girl. however, they were happily married and had 7 children, including my father David in 1925. i too am curious about other descendants, please let me know what you find. thanks, jim lowry

Lowry

I'm descended from another Lowry family who came from Parish Kilmore, County Down, & also emigrated to Canada in 1853. The parents were John Lowry & Jane Christy who were married in 1832 at Lissara by Rev Joseph Lowry. They came with 4 children - Eliza Jane, David Hamilton, James Carmichael & Martha. John Lowry came as a missionary for the Free Church, later becoming a colporteur with the Upper Canada Bible Society.
I've been reading the proceedings of the Irish & Scottish Presbyterians of this period & sending missionaries to Canada (as well as India) was identified as a priority in the 1840's & 50's.
Given the number of Lowry families who came from a relatively small area in Ireland (County Down) to Canada as either ministers or missionaries, there must have been family connections involved.
Rev Thomas Lowry was, I believe, a son of Rev Joseph Lowry from Crossgar. I believe a son of Thomas' later became a minister in the Ottawa valley.
It seems that Thomas Lowry & his wife came to Canada in either 1849 or 1850. They had a daughter - Florella Reid Lowry - who died at the age of 1 in Barrie on July, 1850.

hi olive..I have very little..Rev. John Lowry''s daughter Margaret married Rev. james Stuart from Cootehill,Cavan..they migrated to Canada approx. 1843-7..they had 2 daughters in Ireland and then family and descendents around Toronto..ive added this to my tree..Leeksfam..as it was the Stuarts that had Memoirs of James'' Lowry(rev.johns brother)..another daughter Eliza married a dr. stuart in same year 1836. both weddings were officiated by a Rev. Thomas Lowry..he went to Canada..Barrie about 1849..he married Florella Reid..daughter of Rev. John Reid..i WAS TRACING Thomas as I thought he was linked somehow to Rev. John...In my meanderings ive also noted Rev. John Reid was at Clonaneese for a longtime.Ill add john lockhart to my tree also and keep in touch if I find more...im still searching for rev.johns and surgeon James' father etc.
cheers Nev.Melbourne.Aust.

Greetings,

I work in the office of Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto. In 2016 Pittsburgh will be celebrating its 200th birthday. We are planning a celebration and a meaningful component of this event would be to have past Mayors and/or their descendants participating in the festivities. Although our planning is still at the rudimentary stage, I wanted to reach out to you in advance, because of your family’s significance to Pittsburgh’s story.

According to your research, you may be related to Pittsburgh’s Mayor Lowry. Were you able to find any further information on whether your hunch is correct? To have Mayor Lowry’s family’s in attendance would be particularly meaningful.

Thus far I’ve made contact with 28 Mayors’ family members! All of their feedback has been unanimously positive about attending the 2016 celebration.

To have descendants of our past Mayors participating in our 200th birthday will be a tangible and extraordinary link to Pittsburgh’s first two centuries. Please share this invitation with your relatives. I look forward to hearing from you.

My contact info: 412.255.2632 / gloria.forouzan@pittsburghpa.gov

Thank you!

Gloria
Re: JAMES LOWRY JR

My great-great grandfather was James Lowry Jr., who served as Mayor of Pittsburgh from 1864-1866. Mayors at that time had two-year terms. He was born in Scotland in 1820 and died 1876.
I don't know how many children he had but one of them, William, was my great grandfather, who was disowned by the Mayor because he married an Irish-Catholic girl, whose name was Annie Durning. She was from the Sheraden section of Pittsburgh. They had 9 children: James, Harvey, William, Paul, Edward, Nellie, Lydie, Ruth and the youngest was my grandfather, Joseph Leo. My grandfather was born in 1890 and died 1959 - he grew up in Sheraden and when he married my grandmother (Mary Irene Ganley), lived the rest of his life in the Elliott section of Pittsburgh.. I know my great-great grandfather also served as Coroner in Pittsburgh after he was Mayor but then he and the rest of the Lowry family moved to St. Louis; leaving my grandfather's family here in Pittsburgh. Even though my great-great grandfather died in St. Louis, he is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville. Janet Perry McMahon

Michael,

Pardon my mistake in that lengthy message.

I mentioned "Madison County, Tennessee" in that message. It should read "Monroe County, Tennessee.

I was trying to get my thoughts down here for you to read.

-Donald

Donald,

Thank you very much for the information. I had never come across any suggestion that David had a wife prior to Cynthia/Synthia/Syntha, but your data looks pretty solid. I will do some more work to further convince myself, and then integrate the information into my tree.

By the way, "Bud" did turn out to be the nickname for one of James Polk Lowry's son, Robert, so the message board did work well for me (as in this instance as well).

Michael Lowry
