Lovato research

My dad's name is Lovato and I've always been curious where the name originated from and what my background is from his side. My dad, Elias Lee Lovato born in Colorado Springs, CO and moved (not sure when) to Cheyenne, WY. His dad was Efren Lovato (all I have), his mom Amalia M. Montoya 1904-1989 and she also lived in Cheyenne WY. I know I had an Uncle, Estellano (sp) Lovato we visited in Mora, New Mexico which from what I was told is also where my dad's parents where originally from (not sure how accurate that is). From all that I've read it sounds like the name definitely originated from Northern Italy and according to the census bureau the Lovato name traveled from there to New Mexico and then to Colorado and some to Wyoming which seems to fit here. If anyone has any other information or questions, please reply back :)
Look forward to any feedback....Donna

The "B" in Lobato is Castilian Spanish; The "V" is the new Spain spelling or the Northern New Mexico Spelling. Example in Castilian Spanish--the be is used for words such as Beso, labios, etc.

Anybody out there have a lead for me? I would sooo appreciate it. We are getting nowhere with the little information we have.
where are you from? Our family is from Northern New Mexico but I know there are alot of Lovato's in the Southern part of Colorado in the San Luis Valley. My mother's name is Jessie but I suspect you might be talking about someone else. I do have some cousins that I don't know but their dad is still alive. I am probably not much help huh? Well, it is always good to investigate and meet other Lovato's through these forums.

Rachel- it must have been fate, as I happened to be searching the Lovato name tonight. It is me, Martha Lovato, your cousin in NM! I can't believe I saw this message. I knew I had to reply...
I am still in NM. I am married and have three girls. I haven't seen my father Leo in ages, nor at this point do I care to. I don't know how Herman is doing. I don't keep up with that side of the Lovato family. A shame I know.
How are you? I know you had gone to California. Are you still there? Do you have children? Are you happy?
I am still in shock from reading this post. Granted 10 years have come and gone since you posted it. I hope it gets to you... You can reach me at cellova@hotmail.com and then from there I can give you my home numbers.
I was thrilled to read your message. I hope to hear from you soon Rachel, my dear cousin. -Love, Martha Celia

My family has the last name Lovato & a few of us were changed to Lovatto at a later date for whatever reason? My Grandfather on my fathers side was Louis Lovato born in 1905 in Boyerous NM. He had 7 children with my grandmother Della Diaz. Grandma was said to be Navajo indian and Louis Lovato was maybe Spanish or Italian or both? Big mystery. Louis had a sister also named Della Lovato who married and settled in Denver, Co. Their Father was maybe called "Little Red" and Grandfather named "Big Red" both Lovatos. They were farmers and from what I know not land owners. There is rumor of maybe a foster family who took Louis Lovato and sister Della as children. Louis killed him self in 1948 Sterling Colorado. Thats all the info there is... Looking for cousins or any family that may know a little more. thank you.

I am still researching the relationship between my Grandmother Pita/Lupita, Maria Guadalupe Lovato Roybal b. 18, April 1909 Chamasel, NM d. 18, Aug, 1996, , SLC county, UT, and the names below. Grandmother Pita married Roldofo Roybal. The following is in her handwriting (my notes follow):
Lovato Couple in Chamisal, NM. Juan Lovato wife Leanardita M. Lovato and children:
1. son Jose Lovato.
2. Ramon (passed away).
3. Tiburcio Lovato and wife in Magna, UT -no children.
4. Ernie Lovato of NM.
5. Stella Lovato of NM.
6. Romsncita Lovato Fresquez and twin
7. Bernie or Bernice Lovato of NM.
8. Josefita (widow) Rio Lucio, NM.

My notes:

Found in obit posted by Richard Garcia: Juan P.& Leoardita Martinez Lovato listed as parents to Jose Bernadino Lovato.

My grandma used first initials for maiden names such as the Leanardita M possibly (Leoardita Martinez).

Tiburcio may of married more than once in later years hence the note they had no children.

Hard to read Grandma's writing on Bernie or Bernice.

Looking for this family, Roybals and anything on this Martinez connection. deberashields@gmail.com

Thank you for your reply to my message. As far as our family history goes we came from a town called Lovati. The village is in the Veneto province of Vicenza. Our family

certainly dates back to at least 1325 there. According to family history a part of the family moved to Spain in about 1400. It would appear that some of them became mercenaries

for Spain. But they kept their Italian connection. Then we were sent to fight in the New World. Being paid by being awarded land. (Easier for Spain to give land to its troops

(that they had captured) rather than part with money. Anyway we turn up in Mexico then New Mexico (Santa Fe area) until the Indian uprising, we then moved to El Paso and then

returned to New Mexico in the early 1700's. I understand that we married into most of the families in New Mexico e.g. Baca, Martinez, Chavez, etc. But also workers on our

ranches took the name of Lovato when they needed a last name. Mostly these people were local native americans. Hence lots of Native Americans with the name of Lovato.(spellings

my differ a little but most likely same name). The original part of the family still had ties to Italy even as late as the 1920's. They also had ties to Spain (having lived

there for over 500 years). Most people however will not know about the Italian connection, if they are not part of the original line. Especially if they simply adopted the name

at some time in the past. So is Lovato Italian, or Spanish its both. Italian up to and before 1325 and even upto today and Spanish from about 1400 to now. Ofcourse we Lovato's

get everywhere and I even know some in England and Ireland. The Irish Lord Lovat even claims Spanish ancestry. So they are probably part of the family too.
