Hi Barry,
My Ggrandmother was Bridget Loughlin from Castlewarren. She had a sister Mary (born 1847). I don't have any other details on Mary but Castlewarren is not far from Gowran. Your Mary may be linked. Have you checked James and Marys marriage cert? Bridgets father was called John so if Marys father was also John, theres a strong possibility that your Mary and my Bridget were sisters

This would be my grandmother, I'm not sure if she is still alive.

She got married in Scotland in 1952 aged 18 to Patrick James Quinn and they had a son together in 1954. Not long after the relationship broke down and they split up.

She remarried again in Scotland in 1957 to John Gillespie but again that relationship ended. They had 2 daughters together.

I cannot find any divorce records in Scotland for either marriage.

She has an irish background, so could of been born there and even living back there now. Her parents were Arthur loughlin and Bridget loughlin (nee Hannerty..unsure of spelling)

Any information at all will be most appreciated

Hi Annette, my gran was a Tyrone Loughlin, there is a lot of them not sure if they are all related but probably are. There are actually quite a few posts regarding them on here and other forums. If you go on the Bogle forum there is distant relatives of your husband's I believe commenting on Bogle - Loughlin marriages. One of which is Marvyn who started the other Loughlin Glentimmon thread.

Andrew

Margaret married Ned Mahan in Massachusetts, about 1850. They moved with Martin & Lot Laughlin & 5 other families to Elgin Illinois & then to Palo Alto County, Iowa in 1856. There were 31 people in total, most from County Kilkenny. The "Irish Colony" settled on the Des Moines River and eventually "The Patch" became the town of Emmetsburg.

I've sent you an invite to my tree, where you can see more details.
pudiimom at gmail dot com

Hi,

If your GGgrandmother was Margaret, sister to Martin, then I'm certain that their parents were Lot Loughlin and Ellen Kealy. She was listed as Peggy (form of Margaret) in the baptismal records and was born on Jul 19 1818. There was also a sister Mary born Mar 6 1815. I'm speculating that Martin was a half brother to my GGgrandfather, John Loughlin born 1808 to a Lot Loughlin and Honor Brennan. I suspect that Lot's first wife died and he remarried. John had a Martin and a Mary Loughlin as sponsors at some of his childrens baptisms which suggests they were siblings or at least related.

I hadn't been able to trace Margaret. Where did she end up?

Hello -
I've just learned that my g-g-grandmother Margaret Laughlin was a sister of Martin Laughlin.

This is the Martin who married Mary Morrisey & emigrated to the US about 1847. They started out in Paxton MA, moved to Elgin IL, and finally settled in Iowa. Martin & Mary's children were Lot (b. Jan 1, 1839, Castlewarren, Kilkenny) Ellen (b 1841), Patrick (b 1845) & John (B 1850).

Any idea on who the parents of this Martin & Margaret might be??

Hi locky777

I hope its not too late to try this one on you. My great great grandfather William Loughlin appears on the 1871 census for England for the first time. He had died by the 1881 census. He was married to someone called Ann who was born in Wicklow. His birth place is given only as Ireland.

Their oldest child was born in 1862 in Ireland but next child in 1864 in Liverpool. As far as I can tell the children's names were Margaret/Margorite, Bernard,Julia, Michael, Maria. Last three born in Liverpool.

Might our families be connected?

Frank
Hi Jenny,

Apologies, I only spotted your post now. Unfortunately, I still can't make any link. If you've been to Castlewarren, you know that its not exactly a metropolis! .... so no doubt if we could go back another generation or 2, we could establish a link with all the Loughlins. The problem is that you hit a wall at around 1800. I've found that with all the family lines I'm researching. I'm trying out genetic (DNA) genealogy to see if further links can be established but no luck yet!

All the best

Joe

Hi Jenny,
I see you put a message on the Free forum too but I'll cover off both queries here. Yes, I've come across your line but have not been able to establish any links. Castlewarren is a small place and had many Loughlin families and I have no doubt that they were all linked at some stage. However, we'd need to go back a few more generations to get that link and records beyond the late 1700 / early 1800's don't exist. Given the childrens names, you can assume that your Patricks parents were Patrick and Mary or Bridget. I found references to the marriage of Patrick Loughlin and a Bridget Breen in 1808 and Patrick Loughlin and Bridget Dunn in 1811 (1811 is probably late as that would place your Patrick at less than 18 when married). I've also been trying to link my Loughlins to Martin Loughlin who struck gold in Australia in the latter part of the 19th century. If you have any more details on your line, I'd love to hear from you. Hope this helps.
Joe

Ancestors/Descendants of William James Aitken Loughlin

I'm researching my Mother's paternal side of the family as she was estranged from her father and has no idea when or why the marriage dissolved. The information I have is:

My Mother is Patricia E Loughlin (b. Glasgow 1944), her brother William Alan Loughlin (b. Glasgow 1936; d. Singapore 1961), her Mother was Mary Hollywood (b. Northern Ireland 1912; d. Dunoon, Scotland 2003), her Father was William James Aitken Loughlin (b. Paisley 9 Jun 1911; d. Cheshire March 1986), William's parents were William Loughlin (b. 1882; d. unknown) and Annie Aitken (b. 1886; d. unknown).

According to Scotland's People (GROS: 644/11 0149) William J A Loughlin & Mary Hollywood were wed in Possil Park, Glasgow in 1936 and the National Archives of Scotland (CS258/1959/3949), have them divorced in 1959 but they were seperated long before then.

I was wondering if anyone could help me pinpoint the correct Loughlin family?

The names of the rest of them that I can remember are:

Bill, Jack and Michael, who all went to America. Then back in Ireland were Dan, Andy, George, Elizebeth and Kitty (not me!). There were 16, I think, not 14 and I'm wracking my brains to remember the names of the others.

I am curious to know where you fit in to all this, Mandy? It's very exciting as contact had been lost up until now.

Kitty

Thomas Joseph Loughlin, 19 Parliament Street, Dublin, Ireland in 1901 Ireland Census

Thomas, my wife's great-grandfather on her father's side, was married to Frances Mary Curran from Wicklow when the 1901 Census in Ireland was taken.

They lived with their family and others at the above address. Any information on Thomas and Frances would be most welcome. Outside of the Census of 1901, also 1911, when they had moved to Dalymount in the north of the city of Dublin, we can find no information about him.

A Frances Loughlin, d. 1918 aged 58, is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery together with several other family members. Whether she is the Frances married to Thomas is as yet unknown, as Thomas is not buried in that grave and no record of his death can be found in that cemetery.

Would be most grateful for any and all information.

Info needed on Catherine and Margaret Loughnane. They changed the name to Laughlin/Loughlin upon arrival in USA. Their parents were John Loughnane and Johanna Shanahan. Catherine was born on 14th September 1882 at Glanballyma, Kilflynn, Co. Kerry. Margaret was born on 1st April 1890 at the same address. They had approx. 10 other siblings.

Catherine Loughnane was married to John Browne and they lived at Holyoke, Mass. They had at least 3 children: Eileen (Ellen), Mark & Paul.

Margaret may have been married to a Walter Schmidt in New York. This I have heard from another ancestry user but can’t confirm it. This couple had approx. 3 children including John(Jack)

As for the girls other siblings, I believe another brother Timothy(born: 24th August 1880) lived in New York and may have been married to Mary Sheerin?.

They were first cousins to the Hogans (Stephen & Jeremiah) of Bellows Falls, Vermont.
Im trying to trace the following family:

Timothy Loughlin married to Mary (Sheerin?)around 1912. Their children were: John (b. 1915), Timothy (b. 1916), Catherine (b. 1918), Joseph (b. 1921), Gerald (b. 1924) & Joan (b. 1926)All ages are approximate from census returns. In 1920 & 30 the family lived at Webster Avenue, New York. (The Bronx I think?) I need to find out about the parents Timothy & Mary especially, and if correct in my assumptions, these are my cousins and I have plenty of information on the Irish relatives.

Eoin Quilter

Hi Joe,
I have just returned from a visit to Castlewarren & have many more questions than answers. I met a Lilly Kinsella who resides in the same house in Castlewarren that has been shown on records as occupied by Loughlins. Lilly is the grand daughter of Mary O'Loughlin (born 1877) who married Thomas Kinsella in 1904. Mary is the daughter of James Loughlin (born 1851) who married Johanna Comerford in 1875. James was born in 1843 the son of James Loughlin and Mary Murphy.
It seems Lilly & I may be related through Sara O'Loughlin (born 1877) who married John Power. Sarah is the daughter of John Loughlin (born 1840) & Catherine Kealy. John is my missing 2nd great grand uncle who did not come out to Australia. The link is that I have a letter of a visit to the Powers in Castlewarren in the 1950's from one of my Australian relations.
I also have a couple of photographs of headstones of Loughlins going back to the 1700's .
My question to you is do any of these people relate to your family tree as I still am having trouble around 1800 - 1820's
Sorry it all sounds complicated, but it is.
Regards
Jenny
Are you still searching? My great-grandmother was Clara Loughlin, born 1872 in New York and was raised in San Francisco from 1873. Her father Peter J Loughlin came from Prince Edwards Island, CANADA as well as his wife Mary Burke. To be honest not sure if they spelled their name as Loughlin or Laughlin as I have found both spellings, but Loughlin is the majority. I have found no futher information regarding Peter or Mary Loughlin beyond census records, voter records, & phone listings in SF and SF Bay Area.

Information

The information regarding the Loughlin history name here is incorrect. Loughlin came from LochLainn meaning of the lake and not as stated on this page. This refereed to the vikings who settled at the lake hence the meaning "of the lake". Not from Mac Loughlin or O Loughlin although the Loughlin family crest and Loughlins are the same. the O Loughlin came from catholics who took the protestant and became O Loughlins

I noticed you have two "Payne/Perry/Loughlin" trees - one with Coleman Flaherty as the Spouse of Bridget Flaherty, and the other with Colemen Flaherty has the father of Bridget Flaherty. We are interested in Colemen as spouse.

Re: MARTIN LOUGHLIN

I have a book from Emmetsburg on the history of its founding and Martin's last name is spelled with an 'o'. What I have learned about the name is that in Gaelic it was spelled Lochlann and then Lochlain eventually Loughlin. Loch means lake and lann means land. And the name was used to refer to the people who had come to Ireland from Norway or the "people of the coves." In some cases Loughlin even means Viking.
I don't know anything about my Martin and Mary (I didn't even know her last name was Morrissey) before they came over the America. Do you know where to get info on the Laughlins when they were in Kilkenney? I'm wondering how long they were there. Were they farmers? Was it the potato famine that cause them to emigrate? Where did your Loughlins end up?
