James Looby (Luby, Labbe, Lubby, Newbie, etc) was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1797 and made his way to Newfoundland, where he eventually died before 1864. (It is possible his father's name is John or James or Patrick).

James married Ellen Clooney (Clummey, Clumney, etc), born in Ireland around 1796 and she died in (maybe Daniel's Harbor) Newfoundland after 1864.

Their daughter, Ellen F. Looby was born in St. Johns, Newfoundland in 1832 and made her way to Newburyport, Mass, where she married Nicholas Joy in 1856. Together they had nine children, only two of which survived to adulthood. Ellen lived in Gloucester, Mass and Watertown, Mass, where she died in 1917. She was my great-great-grandmother.

In the meantime, James Looby and Ellen Clooney had another daughter, Joanna Looby, born in (St. Johns) Newfoundland in 1828. She came to America as well, never married, and lived with her sister in Gloucester, Mass, until she died in 1898.

That is all I know about the Looby part of my past. I do not know if James and/or Ellen had any siblings who went to Newfoundland too, or anything about the Looby's of Waterford, Ireland. I'd love to hear from you if you know more than me.
