Edith Henrietta Caroline Nelson, the daughter of Sever Rinehart and Tilda (Hestekind) Loken was born on June 13, 1906 at Albion, Nebraska. She was baptized on October 7, 1906 and confirmed on May 9, 1921 by Rev. A. Turno at the Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Albion. At the age of 5 Edith moved with her parents to a farm in the South Branch Community. She attended elementary school at Boone County School District 82 & 57 and graduated from Albion High School in 1925. Edith attended college at Kearney State, Kearney, NE; Wayne State, Wayne, NE; and Dana College in Blair, NE. Edith taught school for 3 years.

On August 29, 1929 Edith was united in marriage to William Alfred Nelson at the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. They lived and farmed in the Dennison Community for 2 years. They bought a farm in the South Branch Community in 1931. After her children had grown up she started teaching again. Edith taught school altogether for 20 years at Boone County School Districts 77, 19, 56, and 57. In 1981 William and Edith moved into town.

Edith was a member of the Immanuel-Zion Lutheran Church rural Albion. She taught Sunday School for 15 years, and served as president of the Immanuel Ladies Aid. She was also president of the Women’s Mission Federation of the Omaha Circuit of the E.L.C. Edith was the secretary for many years of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #162 of Albion, and Secretary of the Boone County Extesion Service. She served as president of the Women’s Improvement Club and President of the Friendly Neighbors Extension Club. She also worked on the election board for many years.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2007 Edith passed away at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion at 100 years of age.

She is survived by her daughter Norma Stone of Blair, NE; daughter-in-law Kathy Nelson of Albion; 7 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 sister Ruth Ekstrom of Albion; 1 brother Oliver Loken of Albion; along with other relatives and friends.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bud in 1981; 5 sisters: Somalina Loken; Selma Landen; Viola Schmadeke; Ethel Loken; and Stella Peterson; 2 brothers: Melbourne and Alfred Loken.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at the Immanuel-Zion Lutheran Church rural Albion with Rev. Dan Monson officiating. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
