Loebig is the name of my 2nd great grandfather. He and his wife first appeared in the 1870 US census in New Albany, IN with the spelling of his last name as L-A-B-I-G. He listed his birthplace as Wurttenberg.
George Loebig was the first of our line of Loebigs in the United States, showing up in the 1870 census in New Albany, Indiana. His second daughter, Anna M. married Henry A. Breetz, my paternal great-grandfather.
In the 1880 census their name is spelled as L-O-B-I-G. Interestingly, there is another Loebig family in the New Albany area as well. The patriarch of that family is George as well. In the 1880 census George (57) and his wife Mary (44) and their children George (22) and Mary (19) are living in the same township as John (25), his wife Anna (27) and their children Frank (3) and William (2). George and John are brothers and all three, including father George, are blacksmiths. In the 1880 census they are living in the Village of Graysville, a part of northern New Albany. All of the children of George and Mary (John, George and Mary) report to have been born in Indiana. George, the father lists his birthplace as Hessedarmstadt and the same birthplace for his parents while his wife Mary lists hers as Pennsylvania and with her parents from Bavaria. Johns’ wife Anna lists her birthplace as Louisiana with her father from Denmark and mother from Bavaria. This family shows up in the 1870 census as Labig and living with them is Jospeph Werner (20) likely the brother of the wife, Mary Werner. In the 1860 census they are listed as Leibig.
George and his wife Mary, nee Finger, produced six children:
1. The oldest Mary Ann married and moved west with her husband and died in Colorado many years before he did. She and her husband had two daughters who died in California.
2. Anna Marie married Henry Aloysis Breetz. Henry and Anna were responsible for keeping the Breetz name alive with the birth of their only son, Herbert.
3. John, the oldest son, moved to Colorado in the early 1900’s and we can not find any records for him after the 1900 US Census.
4. Frank J. married Anna Badgett but died shortly after having two children, Lillian and Harry. Not sure what happened to Lillian and Harry does not appear to have ever married.
5. George Louis married Angela Hennessy and lived in New Albany until they moved to Kentucky. George, or Uncle George, as we called him, worked for the telephone company his entire life. He was a really genuine and fun person. After his first wife died he married “aunt Artie” who was a very special and funny lady. They really enjoyed each others company. The only way this line of Loebigs keeps going is through the children of George and Angela.
6. Olivia Eva married Frank Anton Cooper. The couple living in New Albany their entire lives but never had any children.
Trying to find the origins of George and the reason he immigrated to New Albany.
