Llewellyn to Lloyd name change in 1800's in England??

Classification: Query
Surnames: Lloyd, Llewellyn
It is told in my family that our family was Welch and were originally Llewellyn's. My great great grandfather (William) changed the family name from Llewellyn to Lloyd. I can't find anything on his parents either as Lloyd or Llewellyn. My great grandfather - William's son, moved to Canada as a clergy, with his wife (Lillie Pinder Lloyd), then on to the states (Maine, mostly). There was contact with the London family until WW2 and then nothing. But, I don't know any of their names. Anyone have a similar story in their history??
