Looking for information about Vachel Ijams, who fought in the Revolutionary War and was, I think, from North Carolina. Any help appreciated.

I have a Vachel Ijames in my database for Davie County NC (which was part of Rowan County until 1836). He was supposedly born about 1759 in Anne Arundel Co. MD, son of John Ijames and Ariana Worthington, married Martha Cunningham 19 Sep 1791 Rowan Co. NC [marriage bond date], died 20 Jan 1833 in Lauderdale Co. AL. He may also have married Lilah Gaither.

I show five sons: Joseph, Basil Gaither, Wilson, Pearson and Burgess, and three daughters: Nancy, Elizabeth and Margaret. I found some information on them in WorldConnect, but don't know if it's accurate.

Vachel had a brother Beal Ijames who married Elizabeth Little in 1791 and is the ancestor of many descendants in the Davie Co. NC area.

I don't have any information on Vachel's military service.

There is a Pension application for Vachel Ijams at the Heritage Quest site. It is 16 pages long, I read only a little of it but it appears that at the time he made his application he was living in Alabama. In it he mentions residing in Rowan Co NC. He also mentions going on Furlough to his father's house in Prince George Co (no state given). He was serving with the Maryland line at this time. He apparently enlisted 3 times.

Your local library may have access to Heritage quest if so you can copy the pension application.

According to my family history, Delila Ijams was the daughter of Vachel Ijams and Martha Cunningham. She married David C. McClamroch.

I think perhaps the confusion is that Delila was the daughter of Vachel and not the second wife.

Thanks for your help!

No, there really is a Lilah Gaither. However, I don't know for sure that she married Vachel Ijames.

Gaither family material states that there is an undated marriage bond for Vachel Ijames and Lelah (or Lilah) Gaither, which is specified as being during Gov. Martin's administration. This must be Alexander Martin, who served as governor of NC in 1782-1785 and again in 1789-1792.

Since the bond is undated, it's possible this marriage never took place. Alternatively, it could have been a brief first marriage, Lilah having died before he married Martha Cunningham in 1792.

Lilah was the sister of Basil and Benjamin Gaither, who married Vachel Ijames' half-sisters Margaret and Elizabeth Watkins (daughters of Ariana Worthington and Nicholas Watkins). Benjamin Gaither was bondsman for this undated marriage bond, Basil Gaither was witness.

But thank you for the information that Delilah Ijames was Vachel's daughter. I had her in my database, but not connected to parents.

Vachel Ijams will dated 1833 in Alabama, names the following children, William, Joseph in florence Ala, Pearson,Elizbeth Herridon, Peggy edwards, and son in law David C McLanaugh. There are a couple of other names I can't make out.
He left Rowan county in 1823 according to his application. He mentions his wife Martha no maiden name given.

I had him listed with a son named Wilson but no William. Could "William" in the will actually be Wilson? Or am I wrong on this?

Could one of the names you can't make out be Basil Gaither Ijames? I show him surviving his father, but don't have an exact death date.

Also, daughter Nancy Ijames Bolton survived him.

David C. "McLanaugh" is probably Delilah's husband. I have him as David McClamroch, married in Rowan Co. NC in 1812.

Thank you very much for your reply, which clarifies Vachel Ijams' war service and other matters. Do you know how the name is pronounced? Also, do you have any information on the time that the Ijams family arrived in the Colonies? I am a descendant of David C. McClamroch and Delilah Ijams. Thanks very much.

Hi,
The name is pronounced: Ims. The 'J' is silent. I always like to say, "Yous, Wes and Ims." At least, it gets ones attention. William Iiams [Eyoms or Ijams] is found in Anne arundel Co., Maryland before 1663. This is the date he married Elizabeth Cheyney [Cheney] d/o of Richard Cheyney. To date, no records have been found that shows how or when he arrived. No ship records, nothing. It is believed that his father was Sir Robert I'ans who married Lady Grizel Stewart d/o James Stuart & Elizabeth Stewart.
I have a lot of information on your line also. I have over 61,000 names in my data base for William Iiames and his ancestors & Descendants. Do show that after Delilah died, that David C. McClamroch married Nancy Iiams [Ijames] who was the half-sister of Delilah. Contact me direct if you wish. Guyrossjr@aol.com
