A 32-year Elk Creek Fire Department Volunteer, Ralph E. Vance, Conifer died Dec. 14, 2001
in the line of duty. He was 68. Interment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery following cremation.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 at Conifer High School, 10441
Hwy. 73.
He was born in Denver on Sept. 22, 1933. He graduated from East High School and received
a degree in business from University of Colorado in 1956. He was honorably discharged as
captain from the US Air Force in 1964 and he retired in 1993 as an international captain after
29 years with United Airlines. He was a past chief of the Elk Creek Fire Department.
Organizations he was active with included the Denver Society of Model Railroaders, the
Rocky Mountain Railroad Club,the Rocky Mountain Region Cadillac - LaSalle Club, and the
Evergreen Chamber Symphony Orchestra, where he did set-up and instrument repair. His
many interests included instructing with Westernaires, Ham radio, and a train engineer at Tiny
Town Railroad. He was an outdoor activity enthusiast. As a young man he drove touring cars
in the Front Range area.
On Nov. 20, 1959, he married Virginia L. Littlefield in Amarillo, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; a son and wife, Marc D. and Deborah Vance of Denver; a
daughter and husband, Valerie A. and Clay Powell of Bailey; his mother-in-law, Mary Nell
Littlefield of Clovis, N.M.; and a granddaughter, Lera Powell. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Andrew J. and Marie E. Vance.
