LAKELAND -- For many years, Mr. Howard "Howie" Robert Littlefield was a bingo caller at the Lakeland Moose Lodge No. 945.

"He was very popular here. He ran the Moose Lodge (game) every Thursday and Friday until this past week," said his granddaughter, Charlene Littlefield of Lakeland. "He used to play bingo four or five nights a week.

The retired mechanic for Firestone in Plant City died of lung failure Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 81.

Born in Freeman (Franklin) County, Maine, on March 28, 1922, he served in the Army during World War II and received several medals.

Mr. Littlefield came to Lakeland from Springfield, Mass., in 1968. He retired in the mid-1990s.

Mr. Littlefield had been calling bingo for years, having gotten his start at St. Joseph's, where he was a caller for 18 years. He had been calling for the Moose Lodge, where he was a lifetime member, since 1991. During his membership, he twice served as governor and as past governor with a fellowship degree.

"When my Dad passed away, he just took over. He was an awesome role model," Charlene Littlefield said. "I played bingo with him. My very first bingo game was with them. He just loved to be with people. That was his whole life."

He was a member of the Regular Veterans Post No. 3 in Lakeland.
