Re: Help with Church records

As Shawn points out very well there are few records in Ireland that are free. You can try www.emeraldancestors.com a Northern Ireland resource - connected to Ancestry.com

A not for profit Heritage Foundations has records for Tyrone and the Dungannon RC records go back to 1821
and I don't see a Dungannon CofI/Protestant listing but
could fall under the 5 listed. I do know that if a particular church was not available people were baptised in the nearest church regardless of religion. You search by names not parish's. You can contact me at codeannette@yahoo.ca for the website.

The Tithe records are used as an earlier census substitute
for Griffiths and are available on Ancestry.com now.

You can use Griffiths 1860 to find that the Parish's where the Lipsey's lived in 1860 were Clonfeacle, Drumglass, Killyman and Tuyllniskan and all are in the Poor Law Union of Dungannon.

There are no Lipsey listings in the Northern Ireland telephone book for Dungannon but there are 9 Carson's. This is the only Tyrone area I looked as there are 114 areas for telephone numbers.

Shankill Parish Antrim, Northern Ireland is not listed on the Heritage Foundation CofI records
Donegal Parish, Donegal CofI 1810+
Leitrim, parish Carrigallan has records RC 1829-1899 with significant gas from 1829-1887 NO CofI but Presbyterian
births from 1829-1917, marriages 1835-1869 and some
death records 1880-1900

With a name like Lipsey you shouldn't have any trouble locating them on the Heritage Foundation website as well as having both parents names and mother's maden names.

You might possibly get some information from these two websites, different information given from different counties:

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+County
www.igp-web.com + County

www.proni.gov.uk - Belfast not sure what they have for
Northern Ireland

Annette Code

I am researching my grandmother Myrtle Lipsey(Lipscy)she was the daughter of Ferdinand Lipsey and Mary Bland. She had a sister Laura and Rose, brother James. They lived in Minnesota as children. Myrtle was married for a short while to John Murphy and had two children Ethel(b1915)and Chester(b1916).I believe she lived in Hill City, Mn.when they were children. My dad was Chester and never knew his dad. I would appreciate any information on this marriage.

Hello,
My Great Grandfather came from the same area. His name is Robert J Lipsey born 18 March 1867. I'm not sure when he came to the US but his father Robert came about 1906 along with brothers Andrew B 1890, Joseph B born 1 oct 1887 and sister May born 1895. The ships passenger list lists Dungannon as the residence for some and Edendork for May. I would love any info you may have. I think Robert J Lipsey's father Robert was born about 1841.
Thank you,
Andrew

I have A Robert Lipsey b. 1847 in PA son of Anthony and Ellen who was son of James.
I have another Robert b. 1848 Ireland m. Agnes Jarvie. Their son Robert was born in 1884 in probably Williamsport, PA. This Robert was son of THomas and ELizabeth who was son of James.

Lipsey is not that common a name, so likely we are all related, BUT HOW in the question?

The Thomas who is our 2nd Great Grandfather migrated from Ireland to Scotland in the mid 1800's. HE was married to Elizabeth Carson or Cassel (as it is spelled on their son Andrew's death certificate). They then immigrated to PA in the late 1800's. Our Thomas's father was James.

If any of this fits with what you have, email me at butlersd@nwlink.com or post a reply.

Unfortunately you need to know the denomination and also where in Co. Tyrone your Lipsey family lived before you can start a proper search of records. The term Protestant covers a number of denominations - Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist etc.. For Church of Ireland records you need to know the parish, to search Presbyterian records you need the name of the congregation - e.g. Ballygawley, Arstraw 1st, Omagh 2nd etc

Not all parishes have early records, so knowing the correct location can be important.

Some Co. Tyrone church records are available on commercial and free websites, but without knowing the denomination and location it's not possible to suggest one that might suit your search

Shane

Help with Church records

Hello,
I was hoping that someone could point me to a online data base or would be kind enough to volunteer to look up church records for me. More likely just point me in a direction as I really have limited knowledge to go off of. Im looking for an uncommon surname in Ireland, Lipsey. I am hoping to find a Thomas Lipsey and Elizabeth Lipsey (Carson) and children Andrew, William, Thomas, Robert and Mary Jane. THe father would have been born around 1810-1820, and was married to Elizabeth Carson. As far as religion, Robert the first of my line to the United States was married in a Presbyterian church and my grandmother told me we were Protestant. On Thomas' death certificate he had listed his father as James. The griffiths valuation lists less than 20 Lipsey house holds in Ireland and most of them are in Tyrone or Leitrim. Any help would be really apprecitaed, either in look ups or pointing me to an online data base of church records.

A General Lipsey Question

Hello fellow Lipsey's,

Im following a surname of Lipsie, which i found was changed from Lipsey in the early 1900's. My Family was living in PA, USA. I have seen a few families had their ancestors come over from Ireland. Im hoping we can all tie or Irish roots into a bigger picture. The furthest back i can go is to a James Lipsey (may have even had alternate spelling?) he would have been born in the late 1700's, as he is listed as father to a Thomas Lipsey (Lipsay on death cert.) who was born about 1809, and died in Scotland. I beleive the family lived in Northern Ireland. SO lets try to connect brothers / sisters of our family heritage to a bigger picture!

I would be more than happy to get in depth on my line with anyone who wishes to know more.

-Matthew

Yes, you are right. I think with the line that lived in PA from Ireland they used the first names from thier father before them. Im almost certain their fathers name was Thomas, and Roberts brothers name is Thomas and Thomas has a son Thomas... so at first glance it actually looks like you keep looking at the same person haha. In any case, I know that Thomas' children were Andrew who died in Scotland, Robert and Thomas who came to the US, William who im not sure where he ended up and Mary Jane also not sure who she married and where she ended up. And as i mentioned their parents were Thomas and Elizabeth and Thomas' father was James.

I've actually seen documents here and there online for you line with Mary and Eccles married Robert right? I believe that my Lipsey family was also from Tryrone. Actually i think half of the Lipsey families in Ireland lived in Tyrone. I would not be supprised if our lines tied together at some point. My Robert that came to the US was born in 1848 and came over in 1875/6 and lived in PA, and was married to an Agnes Jarvie. I bet that both or Roberts fathers, fathers shared a father. Haha if that makes sense. My Roberts father was Thomas and his death cert mentioned James as his father. I believe the Griffiths Valuation place 6 families with the surname Lipsey in Tyrone Ireland, so again like i said very likely at some point our lines match up. Do you have any further info on the Lipsey line in general. I really doubt that the family originated in Ireland. There were i think 16 lisitigs for Lipsey in the Griffiths Valuation, however, i think a few of them were actually the same person. SO, it would seem there were very few of our surname on the Island!

The info that i have so far, some which is not confirmed;

Thomas Lipsey b.about 1809 Ireland d. 23 August 1874 Scotland. married to an Elizabeth (possibly Carson) born about same time died after 1880 in Pennsylvania, USA.

The son they had that i believe to of my line Robert was born (according to a gravestone in PA, also burried there wife Agnes, and 3 of their 8 children) 1848, died 1900.

I did a search for lipsey in the world census records and saw the one from 1871 which matched birth year, also stated a brother Thomas, Thomas was listed living nearby in PA with Robert. I also found a ship manifest with Elizabteh (mother) and Robert on it from i think it was 1875. Not sure these are the same people. but birth years and places matched census reports.

The family were also coal miners, which is Thomas' profession in the 1871 census of Scotland. Scotland was also listed on census as Robert's wifes birth place (Agnes).

anyways thats a little bit more info. ill look at scotlands ppeople.

Thanks, Matt

Hello,
This maybe be a long shot that i could get ahold of anyone who posted here as this post is from a few years ago but thought i would try! I have a Robert Lipsey born in Ireland about 1848 to a Thomas Lipsey. They were living in scotland ion 1871 and following the fathers death most of the family moved to Pennsylvannia USA around 1875. Through a death cert i dug up for Thomas, James is listed as his father. SO, in Ireland i have from Robert 1848, to James and id guess he must of been born in the late 1700's. Does this match up with anyone Lipsey lines?

Thanks, Matthew

Hello,
I am trying to track down where in northern Ireland some of my ancestors lived. First off the name is Lipsey, which obviously i dont think is Irish, however i used a 1871 census report from Scotland for a Thomas Lipsey, stating birth about 1805 in Ireland. I have more info on his son Robert who immigrated to the United States sometime between 1871-1880. I looked at the Griffiths Index but i dont really know how to decipher that or use information from there to look deeper and try to find info about my line in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated, any questions abour more details id be happy to fill in more of what i know... But once i get back into Ireland/Scotland its not to much.

Thanks, Matt

My great grandfather, Timothy Lipsey(1851-1928 Union Co., South Carolina) father was Thomas Lipsey and Timothy has a brother, James(1858). \Their line goes back to James Lipsey(1748 Jones Co., NC) Several people are working on this family line. I have not been able to trace but to James (1748). But family thinks Ireland was the home land. If you have found out any more info, please let me know or if you think we are working on the same family. Have seen one post of Leitrim, Ireland.

Rosylind
