Hi

I am descended from Sophia Linger who was Kate's sister. I have some details of the family which are on my parker-dunn2 tree but as you say you cannot see it without subscription. My email is davidnsandie@hotmail.com and if you want to contact me directly I can see what I can do to get you the details. Do you have any family tree software?

David Parker

Kate Linger (one of the nine children you mentioned above) worked as a housemaid at Bedford Manor. My great Aunty tells me that her son, Alick Linger, took his mother's surname because he was born out of wedlock, the father of the baby being the Lord of the manor at the time. This however is not listed on his birth certificate and my Aunty says that the name on his birth certificate was just made up in attempt to cover the scandal.
If its possible I would love to see anyone's tree relating to the linger family, I believe you can add people by clicking on tree pages. Mine is publicly available (with photos of the some of the linger family) but I can't view other people's public ones because I don't have a subscription. (poor student!)
Hope my information helps!
Becky
Nicholas LINGER, William SMITH, Henry HINZMAN, and William PETERSON

Hello -

Does anyone have any clues to the relationship(s) between Nicholas LINGER, William SMITH, Henry HINZMAN, and William PETERSON? I'm trying to trace William Smith's ancestry and am hoping that these associated families might help.

William Smith was born c. 1770-1775, so I doubt he was in the Revolutionary War as stated below. He died 1849 in Lewis County (W)V. He is believed to have married a Catherine Kiger possibly in Hampshire County and moved to Harrison County (W)V (in an area that later became Lewis County) c. 1813. He had children: Andrew J., Martha, Abraham, Katherine, and William Thomas. He died after 1840,
possibly in 1849. He supposedly had a brother Henry Smith and another brother that family lore called "Extra Billy" because he fought even better than William.

I'm following this lead because I recently ran across a family history entitled "The History of the Linger Family"
(http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/i/b/Robin-Dibar...). On pages 6-7, the author writes, "Young Nicholas Linger ... did journey with his friends into the outpost settlement of the South Branch of the Potomac. Among his friends were William Smith and Henry
Hinzman, who also happen to be great grandfathers of mine [Preston Linger (1888-1957), author of the book] and who also were in the American army during the Revolutionary War. It was told by some of the "old time" Lingers that Nicholas Linger was amount [sic] the group with Hinzman and Smith. It is very likely also that Nicholas was acquainted with my great grandfather William Peterson who moved to Lewis County in 1801. Smith was British, Hinzman was German, and Peterson was Swedish. The cheap land west of the mountains helped to inspire the westward movement. William Smith did not leave the settlement with Nicholas Linger and the others because he met and fell in love with a beautiful blonde girl whose first name is no longer remembered but her last name was Kyger (*see note at end). The Kygers were mentioned in Hampshire County History 1782 and 1784 as among the earliest settlers there. When Smith did leave for the settlements further west, he took her along as his bride... Nicholas Linger went first to the Simpson Creek Settlement (Clarksburg)."

On page 11, the author continues, "It might interest you to know the names of some of Nicholas Linger's neighbors. When Nicholas needed supplies and traveled the trail down the creek tot he Flesher Settlement (now Weston), he first came to the home of the Shoulders family whose property joined his, and next was the George Summers property. Summers came there about 1800. Next Nicholas passed the home of Henry Hardman who was located about one mile above what is now Horner in 1811. Henry Hardman was the first school teacher on Stone Coal, starting in 1815. The next home down the trail was the Wetzel home. A few different families had previously settled intermittently between the Hardman home and Horner, although Horner did not exist then. Great Great Grandfather Phillip McNemer, Sr., father of the wife of Nicholas Linger, was the next settler down the creek after the Wetzel place. Next Nicholas passed the home of Great
Grandfather William Smith. he and Nicholas had known each other back east and were close friends. Smith lived near the fork of Big Stone Coal and Little Stone Coal near Horner. Smith had previously lived near Gaston on property now owned by Ralph Shifflette. Then later, not liking the location near Horner, he moved to the Simons Low Gap at the head of Linger Run. needless to say, Nicholas Linger often
stopped at the Smith home and at the home of his father-in-law, Phillips McNemar, Sr. Then next on the trail he passed where Horner now stands. There was not one house or one person living there then, but just 1/2 mile below Horner lived John and Benjamin Taylor, who came there in 1797. I mentioned above that Great Grandfather William Smith had previously lived near Gaston on the present Shifflette
property. His wife died there early in the winter of 1812 and she is buried there on the upper side of the main Highway Route 33. Great Grandmother Smith's maiden name was Kyger and she is said to have been very blonde and beautiful. Her death was a terrible loss to him from which he never fully recovered. It is thought she died in
childbirth. I have been told, although I have never seen them myself, that there are two very very old grave markers up on the hill. It is also said that a large tree grew up in the middle of her grave. Smith met her when she was living at the South Branch Settlement in Hampshire County. Bush's Mill, now called Gaston, was the next landmark. Lewis Bonnett first built the mill. George Bush had the
grain mill here in 1808 and later sold it to Henry Curtis in 1812. Gaston was called Bush's Mill for about 80 years. From Bush's Mill on to the Flesher Settlement, now called Weston, there were the Bush's, Henry Curtis, Peterson's, John Schoolcraft and the Smith's on Smith's Run.Weston is then a small crude settlement on the farm of Henry Flesher. In 1817, the village was made the county seat and was laid
off in lots which were quickly occupied. It was first called Flesher Station, then Preston, then very briefly Flesherville and finally Weston. Nicholas Linger bought his supplies at the Flesher Settlement and at Lorentz. That was a long distance to go to the store under the traveling conditions of the time. In the opposite direction up stream
from Nicholas Linger's farm were the McCues and Abner Abbott. Abner Abbott was one of the older settlers having arrived there in 1798."

Thanks so much,
Christina Smith Melnarik

Please let me know if any of the names below are familiar.

My gggg-grandfather was George MICHELS who arrived in the US in 1840. He married Anna Marie THELEN or THIELEN. They had the following children that I know of: Eva, ann, Elisabeth and Joseph...

My gggrandfather was Christian LENGER. Christian married Eva MICHELS. (He later changed his name to LINGER)...he
had a son named Joseph LINGER.

Some of these families attended a mission church in West Granville, Milwaukee County ,Wisconsin called St. Martin's--the
church no longer exists, but the old graveyard does..I've been there..unfortunately, most of the stones are weather worn,
broken and over grown.

These families had
relatives in Waukesha County, Jefferson County and Milwaukee County,
Wisconsin..some migrating to Stearns County, Minnesota.

My great grandfather was Dr. Joseph LINGER. He was born in Oconomowoc on
November 10, 1871. He died October 5th, 1941 in Sturgeon Bay, WI..aged 69
years 10 months 15 days.

In his funeral book, Edwin SCHWISTER signed his name under "Relatives
Attending". Also signing the book were: Clara
SCHWISTER (likely Clara JONEN who married Henry SCHWISTER) and Mr.
and Mrs. Henry SCHWISTER.

In the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Henry Schwister lived in Granville, his
occupation listed as "farmer".

Henry Schwister married Clara Jonen on 19 November 1902.

These are the Schwister(s) I currently have in my data base:
Alvin born abt. 1909; Anna born abt. 1918; Edwin born abt. 1914; Elsie born abt.
1904; Gertrude born abt. 1914; Henry born abt. 1874; Henry born abt. 1908;
Irma born abt. 1915; John born abt. 1906; Josephine born August 15, 1867; and
William born abt. 1912..

If any of these persons match with people in your research files, please contact me at:
apetta@netwurx.net

A would like to exchange information with you.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Susan
apetta@netwurx.net
If you cannot reach me at the above e-mail, please try:
snokes@tscnet.com

snail mail:
Susan Nokes
27532 State Hwy 3 NE
Poulsbo, WA 98370

DIETRICH, Lenger, Linger, Glesius, Michels, Marnetz

Is there any chance that some of your ancestors settled in Southeastern
Wisconsin?

I am related to a Catholic DIETRICH line...the DIETRICH line goes back to
Christian Lenger and Elizabeth Glesius. They were my immigrant couple
from the Trier area of Germany.

This couple came to Milwaukee, settling 1st in the Township of
Greenfield, then in the Granville area of Milwaukee County. One of
their children (Margaret) married a DIETRICH...but we do not know who,
where or when..we do not know where she and her are buried..or where
they attended Church.

Margaret LENGER was a sister to my Christian LENGER/LINGER who was born
in 1838 near the Trier area of Germany. Christian married Eva
MICHELS--who was born in Thienesville/Mequon area. They married at St.
Anthony's in what was Fussville (just south of Menomonee Falls).

It is very likely that Margaret attended St. Martin's Catholic Church
which was on Appleton Avenue--now no longer in existance--only the
cemetery survives--and that is in a very poor state. Then, perhaps
later attended at St. Anthony's in Fussville.

Margaret would have been born about 1836.

1860 Milwaukee County Census, West Granville, Vol 3 page 2:
Christian Linger aged 22, born in Prussia
Laborer on farm of Louis Marnetz

Christian also lived in Jefferson, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, possibly
for a short time in Aztalan, Jefferson County, Wisconsin; Oconomowoc,
Waukesha County Wisconsin; then returned to Milwaukee where he died
November 03, 1910. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Milwaukee,
Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin.

The younger siblings of Margaret and Christian LENGER, stayed for a
brife time in Aztalan, then moved to Stearns County, Minnesota.

There were Dederich's in Fussville, Waukesha County, Wisconsin and
Belgium, Washington County, Wisconsin

I am hoping that something in here may sound familiar...please e-mail
me at the address below, as I do not often return to this board.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Susan
apetta@netwurx.net
or
snokes@tscnet.com

I am mainly interested in the relationships between these families and the surname LANGER/LENGER/LINGER.

Somewhere in those early farming communities in a Barbara LENGER ((born abt 1833-??) and John KLEIN (born about 1833-??)met and married. A Margaret LENGER (abt. 1836-??) met and married--but I have no idea who she married, where she lived, who her children were.

This particular line is Catholic.

These I found in Catholic Records in Milwaukee County:

Frank, Frinks, Frings, Frenks, Hoffmann, Krueser, Reinard, Markworth, Langer, Engle, Klein.

I am just beginning my search for my ancestors, but when I came across this entry, I was astounded to say the least. I've been researching trying to find any details at all on William Benton Linger. My line of decendency is through William's brother Henry. I've been trying to find out if William served during the Civil War. I researched and found his name on civilwardata.com and soldiersearch.com . It listed William as having served in the 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company I. He was listed as having enlisted on June 17, 1861 at the age of 20. There's also a Nathan Linger listed as having enlisted on June 2, 1861 at the age of 20, but I can seem to find nothing definitive about him. I've found in my research, one Nathaniel Linger who was one of the sons of Joseph and Mercy(Hinzman) Linger, born on August 8, 1854 at Spick Lick run at the head of Stone Coal Creek. That would have made him only 7 in 1861. That's way off from the person listed in the data bases, but they list his residence as being in Lewis County. Regardless, I am thrilled to have found this connection to my family tree and history. Does your family have any photographs of William or any other members of the Linger family? It would be a wonderous discovery for me. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to communicating with and hearing from all of you. Much thanks.

Matthew E.A. Linger

In reply to your request, the Linger family from which I am descended settled in what was then Virginia and is now West Virginia. There is no mention in this book of a Christian Linger. These documents trace the ancestry back to Nicholas Linger I, b.abt.1764, possibly in Erksdorf, Germany with the name being spelled "Lincker". Please let me know if you have any specific questions. I will try to help.

Dear Ken, I am delighted to be able to help. I will copy the information as it appears in the Linger Family History. Troy Columbus LINGER, s/o William Jefferson LINGER and Mary Anna Frances THOMPSON was born 7Dec1899 in Lewis County, probably on Stonecoal Creek; died 29July1973 in Randolph County, WV where the family lived near the village of Junior. Roy was 12 years old when his father died, so he went to work to keep the family. He spent all his working years working in the coal mines, settling in Randolph, where opportunities were greater for employment. His final resting place is in the K of P Cemetery there. He married 9Aug1923, Ada Mae WARE, b. 20Apr1905 on Sand Run, Upshur County, WV, a d/o John Weden WARE and Cora Mae HAWKINS, died Nov1974. Children of Troy and Ada: 1. Paul C. LINGER,b.14Jun1924, d. 12Jun1943; 2. Hoye William LINGER, b.27Aug1928, Upshur County, WV, w. Violet Marie SKINNER, b. 18May1932, Randolph County; 3. Juanita May LINGER,b.30Jan1932, Randolph County, 1st m. Bernard JACK, res. Warren, OH, div. 1974, 2nd m. Robert MILNER, res. Niles, OH; 4. Goldie LINGER, b. & d. ca 1935, at birth; 5. Richard Junior LINGER, B.Feb1939, Randolph County, WV. Information on your father is as follows: Richard Junior LINGER, s/o Troy Columbus LINGER and Ada Mae WARE was b. 27Feb1939 near Junior, Randolph County, WV, is now a policeman in Elkins of that county. He married Patricia ELZY. Children of Richard and Patricia: 1. Danial LINGER, 2. Kenneth LINGER, 3. Tricia LINGER. The Linger Family History has information on other members of your (and as it happens, my) family. Your great-grandfather, William Jefferson Linger, is the son of William Linger and Rachel Bickel. He was b. Jul 1838 on Stonecoal Creek, Lewis County, then Virginia, d. 20Mar1913 in Lewis County, buried in the Linger Cemetery near the base of a tree planted by his son, Troy, your grandfather. William Jefferson Linger is the half-brother of my great-grandmother, Susan Frances Linger Herron. William and Rachel had eleven children, (William Jefferson was the 7th). Rachel died about 1846. William married 2Nov1847 in Lewis County,VA to Frances Ann BOWEN, b. Nov1822, d. 12Feb1901. William and Frances had eleven children and adopted a 12th. Their second child, Susan Frances was b. 26Feb1850. She was my great grandmother. So you and I have a common ancestry. I hope you'll keep in touch. I'll be glad to share with you anything I have. Last July, 2000, I attended the Linger Family Reunion in Ohio and got to meet many Lingers. Among them was your uncle, Hoye William Linger and his wife, Violet. He knew my Grandfather, Charlie Burr, (husband of Bessie Lee Herron, who was the daughter of Susan Linger Herron). He had some great stories to tell about that old gentleman. My sister and I were really surprised at some of them. Good luck. Keep in touch.

I'm not sure you will get this since it has been many years since your post. Do you have any information on my Uncle Paul C. Linger? He was born 12 Jun 1924. I am trying to find his cause of death.

From the Linger Family History book by Fred linger and Hartzel Strader: p194
Troy Columbus LINGER s/o William Jefferson LINGER and Mary Anna Frances THOMPSON was born 7 Dec 1899 in Lewis County, probably on Stonecoal Creek; died 39 July 1973 in Randolph County, W.Va. where the family lived near the village of Junior. Troy was 12 years old when his father died, so he went to work to keep the family. He spent all his years working in the coal mines, settling in Randolph where opportunities were greater for employment. His final resting place is in the K of P Cemetery there. He married 9 Aug 1923, Ada Mae WARE born 20 Apr 1905 on Sand Run, Upshur County, W.Va. a d/o John Weden WARE and Cora Mae HAWKINS, died Nov 1974. Children of Troy and Ada:
1. Paul C. LINGER b.14 Jun 1924, d. 12 Jun 1943
2. Hoye William LINGER b. 27 Aug 1928, Upshur Co., W.Va,
w. Violet Maeie SKINNER b. 18 May 1932, Randolph CO.
3. Juamita May LINGER b. 30 Jan 1932 Randolph
1st m. div 1974
1st h. Bernard JACK res. Warre, Ohio
2nd h. Robert MILNER res. Niles. Ohio
4. Goldie LINGER b & d ca 1935 at birth
5. Richard Junior LINGER b. Feb 1939 Randolph

That's all that is listed in the book. The year of his death 1943 would be during the war, that is a possibility, could check veteran's records. From this story, we learn his father worked most of his career in the coal mines, possibly he worked there also and was injured. The other concern was the young age his grandfather died.

Hopes this helps in your quest,

Steve Linger
slinger@olg.com
