Sharon, My name is Wendy Winchester. My given name is Dorothy Lucille Linfoot. My grandfather is Joseph A. Linfoot, youngest brother of Myrtle, Iola, Helen, Doris and Bill(William). I have at some point met everyone one of my great aunts and Uncle. I would be very interested in learning what you know. My whole life I was told that Linfoot was an uncommon name and probably originated from England and therefore made me curious as to where we come from. If there is anyway you can help, it would be very much appreciated. I can also let you know what family I know from my grandfather and his brother and sisters. Thank you

i have a Dinah LINFOOT on my family tree, born 1836 in York, died 1903 in South Australia. Given that it's not that common a first name, there may be a connection. She is the daughter of William LINFOOT and Miriam (Maryanne) WHITWELL. Please contact me if you have any connection to this tree.

Re: Linfoot family
My Mother was Nellie May Linfoot, born at 42 Fairfield St, Darlington
on 21 May 1908. Her parents and immediate family had originally lived in Acomb and York.

I've been in the cemetery in Acomb and found a lot of Linfoots were
buried there. One remarkable grave marker was simply a rough-hewn
rock, about 20 inches by 14 inches, with a bronze plaque bolted to it.

My Great-grandfather, James Linfoot, born 1852 (?), worked on the LNER Railway in Acomb about 1900. The Railway Workshops there were, apparently, the largest in England at the time. For some reason the railway decided to move the shops to Darlington in 1905 and
Great-grandfather and his son, my Grandfather Arthur Linfoot, moved to Darlington to continue to work with the railway.

As far as I've been able to discover, all, or most of the Linfoots
around Acomb were farm workers on the Knapton Estate. The gateway to the estate was still there about 25 years ago when I was there.
Apparently the Lords of the Manor allowed their farm workers wives to
give birth somewhere in or around the manor house. (A "birthing room?) Hence, many of the birth records list Linfoots being born with Knapton House, Acomb, as their birthplace.

Great-grandfather, James Linfoot was injured in an industrial accident
at work in Darlington. The railway gave him a small sum of money and he moved to York. He and Great-grandmother, Sarah Jane (Sanderson) Linfoot lived in a "tenement" on a sort of a Snickleway, running off Coney Street in York, called Waterloo Place. The tenement has been gone since about 1925 when It was torn down to be replaced by a theatre. However, the Snickleway is still there and leads down to the bank of the River Ouse, being about 100 yards long. There is a bronze plaque at the entrance to the Snickleway on Coney Street.

At the entrance to the Snickleway, which states that this was the spot
where the Romans docked their boats and was the site of the path leading up to their fortress, Eboracomb.

You can walk to the end of the Snickleway, look down and to the left, and see an opening in the river wall which enabled families to take a small rowing boat inside the house structure.

I found an old photo of Waterloo Place and did a pen and ink drawing
of it. My Aunt Lena, (Linfoot), Corney is still alive in York. She's
101 years old and has been in an "Old Folks Home" for the past 41
years! She's a tough old girl! I flew over to celebrate her 100th
and 101st birthdays with her... Her mind is still remarkably clear.
(She remembers things about my early years that I'd much rather forget!)

A week after her 101st birthday she fell and broke her hip. They
operated on her the second day afterwards and had her up walking with a "walker" three days later. She's been in a care centre since than
and only returned to her flat in the Old Folks Home last week... She's a tough old Viking Lady!

I sent my DNA off to Oxford years ago and they say that my DNA is
almost pure Viking. Also pinned the location down, showing that our Linfoot ancestors were running around the shores of Denmark/Norway/Sweden/ Germany 6'700 years ago.

Great-grandfather James and Sarah Jane Linfoot had 17, (17 !!!!), children. Sadly though, as was common in the late 1800's / early 1900's, only nine of their children survived into their teen years.... But, with nine Linfoot children surviving, I'm sure that most of the 38+ Linfoots in the York Telephone Directory, are directly related.

Unfortunately wife is crippled and I'm her sole caregiver... She's
ringing her school-bell for me and I must go and prepare lunch. We
live on a tiny peninsula, Point Roberts, Washington, USA, less than
five square miles, surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and
on the north by Vancouver, Canada.

A bit of personal history before I go. I'm Albert John Fisher, a
Canadian, born in Toronto, Canada, 3rd September, 1931. My Brother,
Kenneth Fisher was born in the Married Quarters of Fulford Infantry
Barracks in York, Nov 22, 1925. (It's now a Police Training School.)

I made my way from Toronto to England in 1945 and enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment at Fulford Infantry Barracks in York. I served in York, Hong Kong, Kowloon, Singapore and all the way up Malaya to Penang, India and Austria...

When the Korean War broke out I volunteered to go, was transferred to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. I was wounded three times in Korea and took my discharge, "being no longer fit for service in His Majesty's Forces", in Kure, Japan, when I got out of the British Commonwealth Division Hospital on 30th March 1952.

The following day, I made my way to Hiro, Japan, about ten miles away, where there was the 25th Canadian Army Reinforcement Group and enlisted in the Canadian Army on 1 April, 1952. I did two more Tours of Duty in Korea with the Canadian Army and was then returned to Canada, having been overseas for seven years. I retired from the Canadian Army in 1977.

I had been studying at the University of Calgary at nights since 1973 and had earned a degree in geology before I retired. The Vice-President of Exploration for SHELL OIL was a friend by that time and attended my retirement banquet at the army barracks. He told my
Commanding Officer not to worry about my future as he was hiring me the next day. The C.O, out of curiosity, asked him how much money I'd be making... "$72'000 per year to start." It teed the CO off mightily as it was about twice as much as he was making!

With SHELL I had a wonderful life doing geological exploration all the way up to the Northern tip of Ellesmere Island, Cape Columbia, 82+ degrees North Latitude, within 550 miles of the North Pole. Also out into the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of Canada and Alaska and also to Nova Scotia on Canada's East Coast.

Sorry ... Memories come flooding back!

I hope that this reaches you.

Cheers! John Fisher

We
live on a tiny peninsula, Point Roberts, Washington, USA, less than
five square miles, surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and
on the north by Vancouver, Canada.

With SHELL I had a wonderful life doing geological exploration all the way up to the Northern tip of Ellesmere Island, within 550 miles of the North Pole. Also out into the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of Canada and Alaska and also to Nova Scotia on Canada's East Coast.

Sorry ... Memories come flooding back!

I hope that this reaches you.

Cheers! John Fisher

Hi Jason
Im a bit confused because when Harold and Kate left for Australia in 1911 they did not take a son with them and they had a daighter Edith Francis Linfoot in Australia in 1913 they then returned to the UK in 1916 with their daughter and Harold died a year later I then lose all trace of Kate but I found a birth for Horace Broadbent Linfoot in Stockton the year they were married so it looks like a shot gun wedding but there is no record of Horace going to Australia until much later what do youy know about the family? I live in Cyprus I have a cousin living in Sweden, I new we had Australian relatives, Oh and I have found a cousin in France which is related to us both my name is Carol

Linfoot and he has two sons and one grandson, which I am withholding information for privacy purposes, so my Father has continued the Linfoot line. I do not think there are very many just a few actual Linfoot names in the United States holding the Last name, not to be shorting us girls of course, the that is primagenture for you. Again I would definitely love any information you have so that we may pass this information on to our children and children's children.. Thank you so much!!!

Hello, I would be happy to help you. I do not have a subscription to ancestry.com because I rarely have the time to work on it, and I'm afraid I'm not very skillful with the program. However, I do have a public tree, cleverly called, The Linfoot Family Tree, (would have been more creative if I had realized the identity issues.) The best way to get my information is to view that tree, I'm not sure how you do that, but if you have trouble let me know and I will work on it. A couple of months ago I went to a Linfoot Family reunion in Cherokee Oklahoma, I have attended 3 so far, about every other year. I have yet to find how we are connected, but we have decided that Linfoot is unusual enough that we must be, so they are kind enough to just accept me. Anyway, my point is I had a subscription for a month or two trying to catch up, and I'm afraid I entered some inaccurate information, I'm working on cleaning it up, but I have had little time. Please don't make any changes to the tree so I can keep my records straight, but you are welcome to take all the information you wish. I would be most grateful if you find any information that you feel confident that I have incorrect or if you have any additional info for me I would appreciate your sending it along. The names and dates I gave you tell you how I descended, would love to hear how you fit in, once you get a chance to review it. Do you have a tree? I'm in Oregon, would you mind telling me where you are? No rush, my time is very limited and I'm not sure when I can get back to you. Good luck, and thanks for responding I hope you find what you want.

Your question was from long ago, but I ran across it, and have no way of knowing if you have the answer. The information I have is That William Linfoot 1779-1830 m. Elizabeth Benson 1786-? in 6 Dec 1808, they had 8 children, one of whom was W. Elizabeth Linfoot 1816-1881 Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Elizabeth died in Huntsville, Walker, Texas, USA. My notes also say he m. Rachel 1781-?, they had one child Mary Odefield 1817-?. W. Elizabeth m. George Richie Mercer 1810-1842, they had George Hadley 1840-1878 and Matheson Matt 1841-1923. In Dec 1843 W. Elizabeth also m. John William Oliphant 1821-1883. They had 8 children. Caution, I am new at this, however most of my information is from another very reliable researcher.

Just a quick note, Ronald's father was Arthur Linfoot DOB 1874, and is on my tree, he is the only Arthur (I have not had time to add in your information)but if you go to my tree you will see a history for Arthur back to, I believe, 1715. A better tree is "The Trail of Linfoots", if you have a membership you might be able to ask for access to that private tree. I will send you access to my tree. I see we have the same name for our trees, I did not realize they allowed duplications, I will try to change mine if it is allowed. My best, Gae

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, what I have is Ronald Marley Linfoot, DOB Sept 1907, DOD 24 April 1984, I have him listed as Married to Adelphia Gertrude Mary Gilbert, Married Dec 1939, Chester, Cheshire, England, I have no DOB or DOD, I also have no children listed for either of them. My records show Ronald's siblings, parents, etc. I'm sorry, I don't think I have been of much help. I do have a Sandra Linfoot Sept 1975, Sister Leslie, Mother Debbie Stregger, possibly married to Doug Linfoot. I see no Derek Linfoot. Our lines are related, would you be willing to send me an invitation to your tree? Thanks, Gae

Hi,

I follow a tree known as The Trail of Linfoot's, the owner is very good at genealogy, I am not. On this tree I see a Ronald Marley Linfoot, but the DOD is 4-24-84, Chester Cheshire, England, the reference is the England and Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index. DOB is 9-1907. Also his parents are listed as Arthur Linfoot, and Florence Gertrude Marley. Arthur's line goes back to James Linfoot 1715 from which I am a descendant. If you believe it is a match, let me know as I would like to share information. Thanks,

Likely there will be another reunion in 2012. If you e-mail me I will put you on my list to contact if you are interested. I have a junk e-mail, which is a little safer to post here, it is glincoupon@yahoo.com, once I get your e-mail I will e-mail you back with my real one and we can keep in touch if you are interested in knowing about the reunion. That offer is open to anyone on this board that is interested in a Linfoot family reunion in Cherokee Oklahoma! Would be interested to hear what you can find out. I have a Stella May Wilcox married to Faun, born 1913, that would make her 98, Looks like I should change that to Estella Mae, if that is not correct, please let me know. I have a lot of information on the Linfoots in Oklahoma, and a lot from the Trail of Linfoot's but I can not connect to any of them, I can go back no farther than my Great Grandfather William Henry Linfoot 1839-1884 m. to Susan Holditch. Thanks and good luck.

Hi Lois,
I'm just now finding your message, sorry. I have cleaned up my tree considerably, it is a public tree - The Linfoot Tree, all of my information is there. I have about 30 William Linfoot's listed, so you might look there for your Grandfather. I have about 7 Joseph's but the most recent was born 1846, so not your father. My lineage is through my father, Wilfred Wallace Linfoot, son of William James 1874-1960, son of William Henry 1839-1884. There are actually quite a few Linfoots around, I'm west coast, but I'm told there are many on the east coast. In addition, I go to a reunion in Cherokee, Oklahoma every other year and we get from 20-50 people.

Thank you for the information. I did clean up my tree (Linfoot Family Tree) today, I had a lot of mistakes but those are solved and your information has been added. Actually the name Hamlin came from the tree by JSLLBCC, The Trail of Linfoots, although he certainly may have gotten it from your sister. His tree is far more accurate and extensive than mine.
Hi again,
I replied to you moments ago, but in looking at the other Linfoot trees I track (3 of them, Linfoot Family Tree (mine), Oklahoma Linfoots, and Trail of Linfoots) I see more information. In the Oklahoma Tree, I see Fawn spelled "Faun" same birth/death dates, and same parents. So I see He had a brother Donald Ray and a sister Betty Louise. This is the tree I'm trying to connect myself to. The Oaklahoma tree and the Trail of Linfoots belong to another Linfoot who is far more reliable and knowledgable in this than I am. This is the reunion that I attend every other year, so if you are interested in attending, let me know. On this tree your father is listed as "Hamlin" I don't know if that is first or last.

Thank you, I have entered your information. I used your user name to identify you, which I'm fine with as I know most people prefer to keep themselves and living relatives anonymous. Would it be possible to get your father's name? Do you know if your Grandfather, Fawn, had any other children,(i.e. aunts and uncles to you) in particular male children so I can see if there is a connection there. Thanks for your help.

Ronald Marley Linfoot

I am researching my fathers parents. Ronald Marley Linfoot is my fathers father. I know he died in 1986 and was married to a Mabel Violet Goff. He died in Chester, UK. He had two children from that marriage, Derek and Sandra. I am trying to trace them and have come to a dead end. If anyone can help me with this search I would be very grateful.

Kind regards
J Lee

Hello

Thank you for your reply. I believe we are researching the same family. DOD is correct his DOB is 24 July 1907. He was married to my grandmother before he married Mabel Violet Goff. I am trying to find either child from his second marriage. I would really appreciate any help. Kind regards

Hello Gae

I have just 'invited' you to see my Linfoot Family Tree. I am certainly not an expert on ancestry so I may have got everything right. I hope you can access my tree but if you can't let me know and I'll have another go!

Jackie

Hello Gae

Thank you for your message. My Grandmother was Adelphia and through her marriage to Ronald they had one child, Donald (my Dad). My Dad did not know him and only found out about him when he was 21. The only thing I have managed to find out about Ronald is that he married Mabel Violet Goff in Chester after my Grandmother and they have two children, Derek and Sandra. As far as I can see Mabel is still alive. I will send you an invitation to my tree.

Jackie
