Gatien S. Liger was born in France on November 12, 1760, and as a young man settled in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola. After the revolution there in 1791, he fled to New York City, where he met and married Betsy Ryerse, an English speaking lady of Dutch heritage. They moved to Canada in 1800, and had four sons, John Gatien, Alexis, Edmund, and John Henry. John Gatien and John Henry are the progenitors of the Liger family of the USA. I'm interesting in trying to connect today's Liger families with the information I have amassed in the last 15 years.
