Surnames: Lieb, Leep, Leap
I have additional information on this Jacob Lieb, who is indeed my great great grandfather. Most of this comes from a local history book on the borough of Lilly, Pa. that I came across: Jacob Lieb was born in Baden in 1788 and came to this country in the 1820’s. Mary Helbing was born in 1799 somewhere along the German-French Border. She married Andrew Mennich and they came to America in 1831 and had one son, Christian. Andrew disappears (died?). On Feb 14, 1836: Mary married Jacob Lieb and with young Christian Menich (who used the name Lieb beginning in the 1860’s) moved to Hemlock OWT. In 1838, Jacob and Mary had twin sons, Martin and John. John and Mary died between 1860 and 1870 in the Lilly area. Martin served in the Civil War (see Rootsweb footnote) and did not return to the area until the 1880’s. Martin married Catherine (Meyers?) on Nov 4 1838 and they had 3 sons and 5 daughters. (One of them was Mary Ann or “Moll” Sheridan, who married Owen Sheridan). Jacob is buried in Union Cemetary in Cresson. I have a photo of the gravestone, which is now unreadable, and the death date was 1878.
