my husbands great grandfather came to australia approx 1867 dont know much about how he got here was born in italy but hasnt been comfirmed where he sailed from with his brother lorenzo thanks

I am also a Lia. I would like to know which parts of Italy this surname comes from. I live in Malta, a small island to the south of Sicily, and we have a lot of Italian names here, so I agree that the surname originates there.

There is also a town here, called Lija, pronounced the same way as we pronounce my surname (Leey-yah)

My Lia Ancestors come from Lombardia Northern Italy, cannot back track further than 1860. Do not have much luck as I cannot speak Italian.
