I goofed. Sorry about that. His first wife was not named Hudson. Mary Hudson was married to John L'Hommedieu b 11 Jan 1707 at Southold, LI, NY. My John W. L'H was born 26 July 1838, about four generations after your John. My John is my great-grandfather, and my great-grandmother was his 3rd wife, Annie Reeve. Let me know if I can fill in any blanks for you.

I believe it is Delos GAGER L'Hommedieu. Does your husband have any info at all on Delos' death? I've never been able to tie it down. He visited my Grandfather's home in Calif. shortly after his first wife died. However, my Mother remembered this visit when she was about 7 or 8 years old and remembered overhearing words between Delos and his son, my Grandfather about him remarrying. He is supposed to have died on the way home from this trip and my Mother's brother thought he was murdered somewhere along the train route in New Mexico. I've never been able to confirm this story one way or the other. All the L'Hommedieu Genealogy says is "died while on a trip out West." I don't even know where he is buried.

Also, my Mother remembered that "Grampa L'Hommedieu" built her a really nice dresser. On my Mother's 80th birthday, one of her lifelong friends sent her a drawing of this dresser that she had made in her own diary so many decades earlier, with the notation, "I wish my Grandpa would make me a dresser just like Lucie's." He also built a sunporch off the upstairs bedroom and finished off the attic for my Uncle's room. My Grandmother wrote to her Mother about Delos' arrival and mentions in her letter that he brought three boxes full of his deceased wife's dresses for her to cut down or remake into dresses for herself and my Mother. I always surmised that his new wife, Suzie, told him to get the deceased wife's stuff out of the house.

My Mother remembered him as being really patient and kind to the kids but that there was a definite tension between Delos and my Grandfather. I have gotten the impression that my Grandfather was close to his Mother and I sense there was a deep resentment toward his father for replacing her so soon with a new wife, even if she was a cousin. However, my Mother always cautioned me that her memories were the memories of a child at a time when children were rarely allowed to be present during adult conversations. Her brother wasn't much better on what he knew either. My Mother's middle name was after her Grandmother L'H., Delos first wife, but all the boys in the family were named after men on my Grandmother's side and not my Grandfather's. When I finally saw a picture of my Grandfather's Mother, Delos first wife, I thought it was an old picture of my Mother. They looked like twins and since I'm a carbon copy of my Mother, I guess I look very much like her as well.

Anyway it is frustrating to have been told all these personal tidbits about the man and yet know so little about him. Not knowing where he died or is buried has bugged me for years.

I have a John b. 1843 d. 1898 m. Annie Reeves b. Oct 1861. Their children Susan Deborah b. 26 Nov 1893 in Riverhead and Roswell J b. 28 Feb 1897 d. 25 Sep 1966.

John's dob seems to be the issue. I have no source for my data. It could have been the L'Hommedieu book.
