David Letts  (View posts) Posted: 23 Sep 2000 11:27AM GMT
I am currently researching my family name of Letts. I am building a data base and have over 300 names so far. They are mainly in the UK. I would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in this name. I am willing to exchange information. My current reseach centres on Northamptonshire.

I was a Letts before my marriage and
I am looking for my great great great grandfather (amongst others).

My fathers name was Herbert Jabez Letts and he was born in 1919 in Portsmouth. His father Herbert married Ada Margaret Underwood also in Portsmouth.

The family originally came from Irchester in Northamptonshire and the only reason my grandfather came to Portsmouth was because he was in the navy.

His father was a Jazez Letts and he was born in Irchester in 1859 he married a Sarah Smith. Jabez father was a George Letts. I know that George's father was a John but have not been able to find out which one yet. There are several by the look of it.

I think that John may have married an Elizabeth Eaton.

On the marriage certificate for George he is listed as Lett and so is his father.

Regards

David, my 5th great grandfather is Thomas Letts borne, we think, somewhere near Yelvertoft about 1745. He married a Ann Smith on the 3 Aug 1773 in Cold Ashby, Northamptonshire, England.
They had at least 7 children Rebacca (1774), Mary (1775), William (1777), Alice (1781), Thomas (1782), Ann (1785) and John (1787)

Noticed that you had mailed on the above with an enquiry about the LETTS family.
Well one of my ancestors (Great Grandmother) was FANNY ELIZA LETTS born in Leamington at 27, Shrubland Street on 22 March, 1877.
Fanny was the illegitimate daughter of ELIZABETH LETTS born abt.1851 in Leamington, a Seamstress, and Elizabeth's father was BENJAMIN LETTS, born Northants, a shoemaker.
ELIZABETH went on to marry William Brown @ Pleck Church, Walsall, Staffordshire, UKK., on 23 December,1877 and had another 2 children:- John Henry Brown born 1879 & William T. Brown born 1880.
FANNY ELIZA went on to marry John Jones @ St.Gabriels Church, Birmingham on 18 April,1897 and had 3 children Lizzie Jones (my Grandmother) b.1820, Samuel & Walter.
Eliza's husband John Jones was unfortunetly killed in the Great War on 25 January, 1917, in Mesopotamia, and is buried at the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq.

Hi David, my mother's maiden name was Letts and her grandfather Alfred came from Nothampton. He had a sister Louisa. His mother's name was Ann. There was no father listed in the 1881 census and I have only just been able to send off for a birth certificate for Alfred so am waiting with baited breath.Northampton seems to be the place to be if your name was Letts doesn't it? If my ancestor looks as if they were related to any of yours do let me know.
