Classification: Query
Surnames: Ramsey, Lett, Massey, Haise, Thompson, Huggins, Turman
My great-great grandfather was Alfred Ramsey (b. 1819, MO; d. 1898, MO). He married three times. His first wife was Malinda Massey, whom he married on 24 August 1840. His second wife, my great-great grandmother, was Emeline Haise, whom he married on 18 January 1849. His third wife was Mrs. Nancy (Thompson) Lett, whom he married on 6 April 1865.

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society (CGCGS) transcription of the 1850 census shows Alfred as head of this Cape Girardeau County household:

Dwelling 1546

Ramsey, Alfred, aged 36, male, b. MO
Ramsey, Emeline, aged 26, female, b. TN
Ramsey, William, aged 2, male, b. MO
Ramsey, Charles F., aged 6/12, male, b. MO
Ramsey, Rebecca, aged 68, female, b. VA

William Ramsey is one of two children of Alfred and Malinda Ramsey. I don't know where William's full sister Angeline, born in 1843, was when the 1850 census was taken. She reappears in the census of Cape Girardeau County in 1860, when she was counted as an 18-year-old in Alfred and Emeline Ramsey's household. Charles Ramsey is the first of six children Alfred had with Emeline. Rebecca Ramsey is my great-great-great grandmother, Rebecca (Huggins) Ramsey, a widow since her husband Samuel died in 1822. Samuel and Rebecca Ramsey brought as many as nine children to Missouri Territory from Lincoln County, North Carolina, in either 1818 or 1819.

I've been trying to tie Alfred's first wife Malinda to one of the several Massey families living in the Cape Girardeau area in 1850, so far without luck. I didn't see any Haise households or residents in Cape Girardeau County in 1850, and I know almost nothing about Emeline.

I think I've found Alfred's third wife Nancy in the 1850 census transcription. It shows this "Let" household:

Dwelling 1840

Let, Ruben, aged 50, male, b. NC
Let, Priscilla, aged 48, female, b. NC
Let, Shurd, male, 15, male, b. TN
Let, Martha, aged 12, b. TN
Let, Polly E., aged 11, b. TN
Let, William, aged 8, male, b. TN
Turman, Adeline, aged 19, female, b. TN
Turman, John A., aged 4, male, b. MO
Let, Nancy, aged 24, female, b. TN
Let, Mary E., aged 6/12, female, b. MO
Let, Philip, aged 20, male, b. TN.

Is this Ruben Let the Reuben Lett who appears on the 1836 tax list for Warren County, Tennessee?

Where in North Carolina was Reuben Lett born?

Was Nancy Let actually Nancy (Thompson) Lett?

If so, can anyone identify Nancy (Thompson) Lett's husband and tell me what had become of him?

Where were these Lett's and Turman's in 1860 and 1870?

In 1850, were they living in a part of Cape Girardeau County that would be split off to form Bollinger County the following year?

Was Adeline Turman another daughter of Reuben and Priscilla Lett?

There were a number of Thompson families living in Warren County in the 1830s. Was Nancy (Thompson) Lett connected to one of those Thompson families, particularly that of William Thompson? William Thompson was listed along with Reuben Lett on the 1836 tax roll of Warren County Civil District 1.
