GREENFIELD CENTER, NY: Roger James Lerch, Jr., 59, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Greenfield Center, New York on Sunday, July 13, 2014 as a result of a heart attack.

He was born on May 6, 1955 to Roger James Lerch, Sr and Maxine (Finnell) Lerch.

Jim graduated from Lucas High School, Lucas, Ohio where he set a long standing record in Track and Field for a mile event.
He attended Denison University, Granville, Ohio, then enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 19. He traveled aboard as a Submarine Diver abroad the USS Scamp (SSN588).
While stationed in San Francisco he met and married Lourdes Maria Azera, who survives.

Jim spent nine years duty as a naval enlisted seaman serving abroad the only United States Nuclear Research Submararinal (NR-1).
He received the rank of Commander before retiring in January 2009 after 35 years of service.

Jim took great pride in academic studies achieving two Masters degrees and pursuing a Doctorate in Human Resources. He was selected to serve in the Naval Reactors Program under Admiral Hyman Rickover.

To those who knew him, he was an outgoing fellow who was never too busy to take time for another. He lived his life as an example for others to follow as a loving son, husband, grandfather and a father.

Survivors include his wife, Lourdes; two sons, Jeffrey C. (Shannon) Lerch and Jeremy (Susan) Lerch; grandchildren, Allison, Cadence and Jaxon; nieces and nephews; his mother, Maxine Shopbell; sister, Linda (James) Sgambellone.

He was preceeded in death by his father, Roger James Lerch Sr.

Graveside services with Military Honors were held at 12noon Thursday, July 17 at the B.H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetary, Schuylerville, N.Y.

A gathering to celebrate Jims life followed at VFW Post 420, Saratoga Springs, New York.
