I do speak speak, read, and write Spanish. Early in my career as an educator, I taught Spanish. If you can give me some guidance, I can dig in the Spanish language archives. My father, Jose Ortiz, is deceased as are all of his siblings, so it would be nice to provide some history for my kids on my Mom's side of the family.

Yes, Legarreta originates in the Basque region of southern France. It is believed that during the Spanish Civil War, the women and children were sent away for protection. Some to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the United States. I don't speak any Spanish and have been able to trace the Legarreta's to Chic. Mexico but that is where my research ends. I believe Rafael and Florentino's dad's name was Pedro and married to Paula Granados Pichardo. Any records of birth or marriage would be on file in Mexico as he didn't come to the US until 1919 for work.

I did know that he was my grandther's brother. Rudy and Eddie, my mother's cousins, used to live in the Coachella Valley. I don't think I've seen either one of them in about 40 years...maybe more! I am sure we can help each other. I am retired now, so it would be interesting to go back and look at the family tree.

I have always wanted to know the origin of the surname Legarreta, but it is pretty much untraceable. The only explanation that somehow ties in is that it might be of French origin from the French surname, La Guerre. Have you found anything on the origin of the surname?

Greetings from a Legarreta in California! My mother is Jennie Legarreta, her father, my grandfather, was Florentino Legarreta; he was born in Chihuaha. He married Aurora Granados. He had sisters in the DF, I remember their names were Elvira and Maria. He also had a brother Rafael Legarreta. Rafael and Florentino settled in California. My only uncle, Florentino's only son, is named Pedro Legarreta. My mother is now 83 and my grandfather is deceased. I remember my Mom was always fascinated by trying to find people with same last name as hers, and if you have any information, I would love to share it with her.

I may be going to Mexico this summer just to go dig around in Chihuahua. I am fully bilingual, so if there is any information you need translated just let me know. I have not searched immigration records, but I know my Legaretta relatives entered the US legally, so there must be records; perhaps there are for yours as well. Stay in touch, Carmen

My great-grandmother was named Adela Legarreta (Mama Lala) and her maiden name was Leyva. Her parent's names were Manuel Leyva and Felipa Leyva. Adela was married to Joaquin Legarreta and one of their many children was my grandmother, Clotilde Villalobos. Adela died at the approximate age of 96 in about 1958 and is buried in Fort Hancock, Texas. I have been told that Adela had a sister named Tia Tina who was married to a man named Jose Urquide. One of my aunts told me that she remembered that the family came from a ranch near Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico--Santa Rosalia, I believe. Is this any help?

Dear Marti,

The names do not sound familiar to me, but there are not that many Legarretas even in Spain, so I imagine that all the ones from Mexico are related. My Legarreta cousins are in Texas, New Mexico, and California.

My great-grandfather was Jaoquin Legarreta and he was originally from Chihuahua. I have not searched back to Mexico, but I know that he married my great-grandmother, Adela Leyva, in Mexico and that they came to the US with all of their children in the early 1900s. There must be immigrationt records in the US and marriage certificates in Mexico. I will ask my cousin the name of the town they came from. My grand aunt, Viginia Legarreta Leyva Gill, died a few months back and her daughter , Virginia Gill Beltran Rodrigez, has information. Keep in touch, Carmen--by the way, I live in DC.

We haven't touch base in a while. I have recently found out that my husband's ggrandfather's name may have been Piere instead of Pedro Legarreta. I know he had a ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. I know he was from Valle De Allenoe. I know of at least two boys he had, Florentino and Rafael. Have you been able to locate any further information that could link the families?

Dear Carmen:
I was thrilled to get your reply, as we are related. My father is Manuel Leyva his sister was Adela Leyva her husband was Joaquin Legarreta and I understand she had many children. My Tia Justina lived in Ysleta, Texas. I was very fortunate to have known most my fathers siblings and I would love to share my stories with you. I was told that I met my Aunt Adela when her husband died but I was very very young. I celebrated my 61st birthday in February. And I live in California. Please respond as soon as possible as I want to share as much as I can. All my love, your cousin Romelia Leyva

Carmen,
Thank you for the info. I will print it out for future reference. If there are not that many Legarretas then you and my husband and my children must be related. Especially if your Legarretas came from Chihuahua.

I figure your grt-grdfather must have been born about 1890 or so. I figure my husband's grdmother (Soledad Legarreta Rodriguez) to be born about that time and her father (my husband's grt-grdfather) to be born about 1870. His name was Jesus Legarreta, married to Onofre Rodriguez. I wonder if it is possible that Jaoquin and Soledad are siblings or cousins?

Your grt-aunt must have been a great resource of info. Hopefully her daughter may be able to give you more info.

I wish I could have talked to some of my ancestors about all this info. I only met my father-in-law twice, in Mexico. The second time I asked him about his family and the family of his wife who had died when my husband was almost 3 years. My husband did not even know some of the names I got from my father-in-law, who died the following January after I got the info.

May I use your e-mail address so we can keep in touch through e-mail? I now know it.

thanks,
martie

All I know is that my husbands grandfather, Rafael Pichardo Moses De Legarreta was born in Valle De Allenoe, Chilhuahua, Mexico and his parents were Pedro Legarreta and Paula Pichardo. My husband nor I speak any Spanish so it has been hard to search any other web pages, since most are written in Spanish. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Denise
