My maternal great grand aunt was Nancy Elizabeth Leeth who married Abraham Hiles in December 1896. I see that Abraham was in the Ohio Penitientiary in the 1900 census. Does anyone know what crime Abraham committed and how long he was a prisoner?

Sharon

Burial Site of Cornelius Leeth and Matilda Walls Leeth of Pike County, Ohio

My 2nd great grandparents are Cornelius and Matilda (Walls) Leeth of Pike County, Ohio. Cornelius was born about 1820 in Pike County, son of John and Catherine (Long) Leeth. His death was sometime after the 1860 census.
Matilda was born April 1820 in Pike County to Levi and Susannah (Harmarson) Walls Jr. Her death occurred after the 1900 census.
I am trying to locate their graves. Maybe, even learn more accurate birth and death dates, if possible. As they lived in Pike County, I would guess it might be one of the county cemeteries.

I'm wondering if anyone has actual documentation or knowledge if Garnet Leeth married and to whom. Garnet Leeth was born about 1916 in Fayette County to Henry Clay and Ada M Vince Leeth. There is a Garnet Roseboom Leeth who married a Sidwell but that's niece. Also, I'm looking for information on the year of death.

Thank you.
Sharon

Karen, I am writing this for my cousin, Cynthia, who is new at this genealogy stuff and she is searching for Mabel Doda, the wife of Loy Leeth. They were in Clare, Michigan. Do you have any information on their family? I see that he was your great-grandfather, so you have to be related to Mabel also! Cynthia can help you out with her side of the family -- the Doda family!

I'm sorry I've missed your reply for the last year. Yes, your line is related to me and is in the book. Ashby, Willard, Raymond, and Carl (and Eldon) were sons of John H. Leeth b. c1865, the son of James Leeth Jr. b. 1843 d. c1904, the son of James Leeth Sr. b. c1801 d. 1876, the son of George Leeth 1776-1835, the son of James Leeth b. c1853 d. 1806. The book (Volume I) only comes down to John H. Leeth. I'm working on a draft of volume II which will include John's children and grandchildren. I'd be interesting in corresponding further.
Brian,

I have never been able to connect my Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, Leath/Leeth line to any of the Ohio Leeth lines. At least one of the Ohio Leeths seems to have Virginia origins, but we don't know which part of Virginia. Probably the biggest help would be someone to participate in the DNA testing we have for Leaths. If you look back on the Leeth message board for about 4 or 5 messages, you'll find Jack Leath's post on the Leath/Leeth/Leith DNA project he started. If your line matches one of thoses, then we know where to start looking in Virginia.

Andy

Re: Leeth or Leith

Hello, Gerald! Hope you're still reading this thread!

I'm pretty sure that Leeth/Leith was originally a Scottish surname. Actually just this afternoon I was watching an old episode of "Most Haunted" (LOL) and they were coming from "LEITH HALL", which is in Aberdeen, Scotland. It belonged to the (Scottish!) Leith family from about 1660 (when it was built by a Leith ancestor) until ca 1937 when the last of the line sold it to the National Trust.

Quite an impressive place, I have to say!!

And yes, I think that Leith and Leeth are pretty much interchangeable. Remember that years ago, many people were semi-literate at best and that spelling was pretty haphazard and unregulated (if that's the word!) for a very long time.

I myself descend from a Margaret Leeth who married Joseph White, Jr, who came from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania, then New Castle, Delaware, and later to (then) Anson Co, North Carolina, where he was appointed the first Sheriff of Anson County. I have absolutely tons of White ancestors! Also I *believe* that after the death of his first wife, Margaret Leeth, Joseph White married her sister, Elizabeth Leeth. I guess you call that "keeping it in the family"! *grin*

One more thing! I am intrigued by your surname, Bumbalough. It sound SO MUCH like one of my own family names, which is "Brumbelow"--a family which lived in first Virginia, then North Carolina. Any chance that we are related on this line?? It is definitely a very unusual surname!

If you want to contact me, my email is orangeblossom17@gmail.com. Or you can reply here, whichever is easier!

Happy hunting! :-)
Patti

Leeth Family of New Castle, DE--Married into White Family

Hi, I am desperately trying to track down the lineage of my ancestor Margaret Leeth, born ca 1710 in New Castle, Delaware. The ONLY info I have about her family is that her father was supposedly named John Leeth (ca 1688--ca 1757--died and probably lived in New Castle also). Margaret Leeth married Joseph White of New Castle, but they soon after moved from Delaware to Anson (now Union) Co, NC. Joseph and Margaret Leeth White had numerous children, among whom are my ancestors Zachariah White and Joseph White Jr (first Sheriff of Anson Co, NC.) I've heard a rumor that after Margaret Leeth's death, Joseph Sr. then married her sister Elizabeth Leeth, but I've seen no proof of this.

Any help/clues/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Patti

Leath, Leith, Leeth DNA Project

A Leath, Leith, Leeth surname DNA project has been established and is seeking new members.

Some of the objectives of the Leath Surname Project are to establish connections between existing Leath lines, to confirm/reject theories regarding ancestors, to identify the paternal country of origin, to increase interests in new areas of research, and to validate existing research.

To participate in the project, you must be a Leath, Leeth, or Leith male (or other common variant of the name). Because females do not carry their father's Y-DNA, they cannot participate directly.

But, if you are a female interested in tracing your direct paternal line, you can have a male relative with a Leath, Leeth, Leith surname do the testing.

The project has been established at FamilyTreeDNA, and more information on the project as well as genetic testing and genealogy is available at www.familytreedna.com.

You may also contact me directly at jleath@hot.rr.com. I am the volunteer project administrator for this effort, and I have no financial incentive or interest in this project other than the above stated objectives.

Please participate, or if you cannot, please send my address to someone who might be interested.

Nancy Leeth/Cornwell connection Jefferson Co. KY 1815
In researching my Cornwell family, I have recently have been examining a connection to the Leeth/Leath and McKee/McKay families in Jefferson County, Kentucky, early 1800s.

Specifically, I am trying to determine whether someone can shed light on the following information found in the Cornwell file at the Stevens Library in Salem Indiana:

Marriage Register Jefferson County Kentucky Court House, Louisville, Kentucky. Book 1 - Feb. 16, 1784 to May 10, 1842.

Arterburn, William Jr. of lawful age of 21 yrs. Enos McKie who heard his parents say so. Presley Art. Witt.
Leeth, Nancy m. 7-10-1815. Witt: Peter Cornwell, guardian
Peter Cornwell’s step daughter

Peter Cornwell was my 3rd great-grandfather and William Arterburn (father of the William who married Nancy Leeth) was my 4th great grandfather. So, of course, I am very interested in determining why Peter Cornwell would have been guardian of Nancy Leeth - and how he possibly could have been her stepfather.

This is my understanding of the marriages of the children of William Arterburn and Nancy Johnson:

William Arterburn m. Nancy Leeth in 1815
Elizabeth Arterburn m. Peter Cornwell in 1802
Sarah Sally Arterburn m. Enos McKee
Presley Arterburn m. Sally Netherton
Elijah Arterburn m. Mary Polly Booker

Accordingly, I am unsure why Peter Cornwell would have been the guardian of Nancy Leeth in 1815. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate your sharing it with me.

Thank you.
