Again, I am doing this to try to correct some misinformation posted on the Internet regarding these families.

FACT and FICTION - LEE FAMILIES BEDFORD and CAMPBELL COUNTIES

Many people have copied the genealogies submitted to World Family Tree by Jim Lawler and others researchers, accepting what they submitted. Also, everyone has assumed that Charles Lee of Cumberland Co., VA, was son of William Lee and Dorothy Taylor and came from Richmond Co., VA. It appears that no one has thought beyond that assumption. However, Charles Lee may have come from MD, PA, NJ, PA or SC or any number of states on the East Coast.

Below you will find the inaccuracies in that research and in the research of others concerning the Bedford Co. and Campbell Co. Lee families. I hope to correct some of this misinformation because requests to the parties concerned to correct theirs is ignored. I do not know what perpetuation of the incorrect information is to be gained by them.

1. Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches by R. H. Early published in 1927 says the following:

David Lee is the first of the name in county records and appears as early as 1745 when he patented 1800 acres on Ward's Fork.
FACT: David Lee – 3/20/1745-46 – Land Patent – 1800 ac Brunswick – West side of Wards Fork. This property now in Charlotte Co.
FACT: David Lay – 8/20/1760 - Land Patent – 113 ac Lunenberg Co. on SS Dan River.
FACT: David Lay – 8/20/1787 – David Lee assignee of Thomas – 127 ac on branches of Sandy River and Sandy Creek.

In 1761 James and Mary Lee and their son William came to this county.
FACT: James and Mary Lee were in the county before 1761 as evidenced by the deed in March 1761 where it says “where the said James Lee now lives”. The Falling River is now located in Campbell Co. Falling Creek is still located in Bedford Co. James and Mary Lee settled on Falling River as evidenced by the deed records.

John and Richard Lee had lived previously in Albemarle, and according to family report) originally settled in Northumberland and perhaps descended from Richard Lee, the emigrant.
FACT: There are many people today tracing their roots that will argue that John, Richard, and William are sons of James Lee and therefore can trace their roots back to Richard Lee, the emigrant. To be related to the famous Lees of Virginia seems to cause them to completely overlook or ignore the facts and thus base their findings on faulty research.

Richard Lee, Sr., m. Tabitha Andrews s. p., left property to brothers William and John, Sr.
FACT: Richard left property to his nieces and nephews NOT to his brothers.
