My husband had a 5th-8th cousin DNA match with a black woman. Ancestry had a "leaf," so I went to connect her to his tree. Their common ancestor was Bernard Moore, but as I added her lineage to his tree, I realized that Moore was also an ancestor of Robert E. Lee, and that she had Robert E. Lee listed as her great great grandfather. Her great grandfather is purported to be an African American son of Robert E. Lee, and her DNA match with my husband would seem to verify this, since it makes her a 6th cousin 2x removed in his family tree. I just thought I would put this out there in case anyone else was as shocked as I was to learn that Robert E. Lee had black children. (Until this DNA match, I wasn't even aware that he shared ancestors with my husband.) It makes sense that her family would pass down this information, since he was not only an ancestor, but a famous one, and that she had her DNA tested to see if it was true or to verify it to herself. Most of our African relatives are not so lucky to be able to pinpoint their white ancestors.
