William Ledden a former sailor settled at the site of Newcastle New Brunswick as early as 1778 and raised a large family. He was one of the early landowners and traders of the town and several of his sons were successful businessmen. Being considered part of the ancient aristocracy of the town he and his sons received a number of large land grant in Miramichi area. The Ledden name had been extinct in the community since the late 1800s.
I wonder if any of the William Ledden's descendants still survive today.
I, as do many other Newcastle residents, maintain the legacy of owning an acer of the original William Ledden land grant. By contrast acquisition of land in the Miramichi area was easy during the time of William Ledden, but now so very difficult by todays standards.
