Lura Abigail LeCain
EPSOM-Lura Abigail LeCain,
103, died Wednesday, Aug. 9,
2006, at Epsom Health Center.
She was born April 15, 1903, a
daughter of Emma Alvina (Murray)
French and Scott French of East
Concord.
Lura was educated in Concord
schools, graduating from Concord
High School, class of 1921. She then graduated from Plymouth Normal
School in Plymouth with a teaching degree in English and music.
She taught in Rumney elementary school and also taught music in Plymouth.
On June 18, 1924, she married William "Bill" Frost Cate (who died in
1953). They raised five children, two daughters and three sons, Charlotte
(Cate) Bunker of Barnstead; Milton "Bud" Cate of Penacook, who died in
1993; Virginia (Cate) Call of Odessa, Fla.; Solon S. Cate of Tilton, who
died in 1982; and Lloyd W. Cate of Allenstown, who died in 1998.
In 1957, Lura married Cecil
LeCain, who died in 1978.
She lived in Josiah Bartlett
Road until she became a
resident of Epsom Manor in
2000. She celebrated her
100th birthday there in 2003.
Lura is survived by a sister,
Miriam (French) Vining, 101,
of Florida. She was
predeceased by her sister,
Nellie Banker of Penacook,
and a foster brother, Dean
French. She is survived by 15
grandchildren, 43 great-
grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren, including two sets of twins.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She has made quilts and knitted or crocheted afghans for most of these
people in the past 15 to 20 years.
Lura enjoyed cultivating her vegetable gardens, raising turkeys, sewing,
quilting and knitting.
As a member of the East Congregational Church in East Concord, she
served as church clerk, choir director and organist. Later, she became a
member of West Congregational Church until the present.
Calling hours and funeral services will not be held.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove
Cemetery in East Concord.
Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home in Penacook is in charge of the
arrangements.
