I am looking for any information on Lucy E. Leaming, 2nd wife of Benjamin Franklin Taylor (the poet). I am especially looking for a photograph of her.

She was born about 1834-1906, burried in Colgate Cemetery with her husband. They lived in Laporte, Indiana, Maddison, NY, and Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents are Daniel Macintosh Leaming and Mary Tucker.

Lucy E. Leaming Taylor was big into lectures/poetry/education-was a member of the Cleveland Board of Education during the early 1900s.The Western Reserve Historical Society has a few documents in their archives I have yet to see.

Thank you for any help, especially photographs to compare to unknown photographs in family things.

-Hanna

We have no male Leamings. Only descendants. The history has a lot of letters copied from the original letters but the originals have long since disappeared. But I have the account of what was put together in 64. that I'm willing to share with anyone interested in the material.

We have extensive files on Leaming and Lemyng. I am the archivist for around 90 Lemyng researchers around the globe. I would think 95% of all Leamings living in the USA have traced their ancestors to Christopher Lemyng and Jeremiah who moved to Cape May in the 1600s. Many books have been written on Leaming and these all on file. I have also researched the parents of Christopher to make the UK connection. We have transcribbed many wills and documents. What some Leamings conclude as the parents of Christopher does not mesh with historical fact. What would point us in the right directions is for Leaming males to join our dna study. This would establish common ancestors and would point across the big pond in the 1600s. I have a Christopher Lemyng in Lancaster in 1199 AD buying land from the baron there. To bridge the gap in time the only thing that will work is the dna study. All we need is for male Leamings to join and history will unfold.

We have a Family Tree up to 1964. It states that Christopher $ Jeremiah Leamying left Englandbetween 1660-1670 .Jeremiah died and Christopher landed at Boston. These descendants made it to Hamilton County Indiana.I believe we are up to 12 or 13 generations now. My grandfather VV Leaming had all girls. And VV was descened fromJeremiah Kellogg Leaming whom was born May 5th 1799 in Hartford Conn. Ther is much more. Grandfather had the family history up to a point and gave it to his grandaughter and shecaught it up in 1964. Three of his daughters still ive any many, many descendents.

She was raised by a Flaherty that was a detective on the Phil Police Force. Somewhere along the way there
was a Schofield. She married in 1898 to Cornelius Johnson
in Washington, DC. I would appreciate any info anyone
can give me.

Yes, a great site. We have referred to it several times over the last few years.
Leaming in a derivative of Lemyng, along with Leeming, Leming, Liming even too.
What is interesting is when a Lemyng in the 1500s or 1600s sailed to the new world they generally found the spelling of their surname changed to Leaming and not Leeming.
In one case we have a Leaming returning to England and their spelling went to Leeming.
WHAT WOULD BE REALLY GREAT IS TO FIND A MALE LEAMING TO JOIN OUR DNA STUDY. We have 8 people now who have been tested. It costs under $100 US to be tested for the male Y chromosome. A Leaming being tested could prove all we have discussed.

Dear Jean: I am just getting ready to go into hospital for a knee replacement but I did copy what I wrote from a handwritten genealogy by a Leaming in the 1890's who was in the Monclova area and had a flour or/and sugar mill. No time to get back into those papers just now but will do so when I return which may be awhile. I'm trying to find descendants of a certain Della Eloise Berry whose line went back as I wrote before. Mrs Vohland completely ignored these people who did exist in Ohio and there were news clippings to prove it if I didn't already know they did.No clippings about Huldah tho but Thomas, yes, and I'll dig that out later one when I can. Glad to hear from more Leamings.Maybe I
got the Huldah and Thomas connection from another Leaming who wrote snail mail sometime back but I believe it was in the "geneaolgy" as stated. Have to stop now. Best, Robin K

Dear Jean: I just turned up a page that shows the following: Aaron Leaming b. 3 May 1738,d. 1806 Genessee County NY m. Sarah Grant of Middletown Conn. Ten Children: in this order, Jeremiah, Huldah, James, Sarah, Aaron, Ephraim, Halsey, Esther, THOMAS b. 9 April 1789 and WILLIAM b. 12 April 1792. Two sources besides the handwritten genealogy done by an 1890 Leaming were: Diary of Aaron Leaming the Second of Cape May NJ and information from a letter of Edward Leaming, of NYC 1910 to Della Berry Morgan of Brockport NY (which I have here) (only a printed excerpt of the"diary" of Aaron the 2nd. Gets more confusing doesn't it ! Best and get back in contact soon. Robin Kernan

Dorothy,

The names in your Leaming family are so similiar to those of the children of my Nathaniel Lemming. Nathaniel Lemming lived in Warren Co., Indiana, which is not far from Montgomery Co. He was born July 2, 1800, in NJ or PA, and came to Warren Co abt. 1829/30. He is in the 1830 census there and entered land on November 1, 1830. He had a brother named Ephraim. From census records, it appears that some of Nathaniel's children were born in PA and some in OH.

The names of his children were:
Lathena, b: 1826
John b: 1827
Thomas, b: 1829
Wesley b: 1831
Juliette b: 4 May 1833 - mine
Rachel b: 1835
Joel b: 1836
Perry b: 8 May 1838
Amanda b: 1840
Ephraim b: 4 September 1843

Would be great if we could make a connection.

We are a group of researchers studying Lemyng, Leaming, Leeming and others. I have one researcher from Bradford and his roots are there. If your roots are from Bradford chances are you are related to three of us. A Joseph Leeming born 1695 in Waddington moved to Halifax around 1715 and he is the Patriarch of many Leemings in Halifax, Bradford, Dewsbury etc. If you have more info on your Leemings in Bradford, please send it and I will try to match it. If you have proof your name changed from Leeming to Leaming please send that too as that is very interesting. Christopher Lemyng landed in Boston in 1670 and changed his name to Leaming too.

I have information that could put a cog in someone's genealogy wheel. It certainly has mine. In the 1850 Ohio census, Thomas Leaming is listed with wife Huldah and stepson Charles M. Merrill. Huldah apparently was born in 1826 in Maine. Can anyone tell me if this was Huldah's first marriage and if Charles was her son by a previous marriage? Charles was born 15 Jan 1846 in Ohio and married Ellen J. Johnson 28 July 1867. Charles is my great grandfather.

My husband is Kenneth Edward DeLap, b. 1940 in Thief River Falls, MN son of Edward Claude DeLap, b. 1916, in Felton, MN, son of Claude Edward DeLap, b. 1882 in Lime Springs, IA, son of James William DeLap, b. 1858 in Wisconsin, son of Enoch George DeLap, b.1839 in Green Co, WI, son of Rev. Robert H DeLap, b. 1797 in Weston, NY, son of William J DeLap b. 1770 in Weston, NY, son of Robert DeLap, b. 1743 in Andover, MA, son of John DeLap b. 1719 in Vermont.

I have an interesting personal letter written in 1931 by Olive DeLap Walker, granddaughter of Rev. Robert H. DeLap. She indicates that the DeLap family originated in Greece, some migrated to France where the name was changed. She further states that Dunlap, Dunlop, Delapp, DeLapp are all corruptions of DeLap, and we are all related.

Was surprised to learn there were DeLap's in Valley City; other than Mpls, I have not run across the name in the city phone books.

Hope we can share info.

Jeanette
kjdelap@ctctel.com

I have seen the name Castillo on the Leaming message boards or surname lists. I don't have information on her but if you snoop around old records of Cape May NJ you may find what you are looking for! There are lots of old records thereabouts or in print, films etc.Not always easy to read but worthwhile. Mrs. Vohland's book completely ignores the entire line I am concerned with. They did exist and there are records, news extracts and letters to prove it back to Christopher and Esther Burnett. Keep trying. You'll turn up something I'm sure. If I find her I'll let you know.Best, Robin K

New Jersey Leamings/Lemings

Hi. I'm looking for possible connections to my New Jersey Leaming/Leming line (Family records have two different spellings.), as well as a little help in filling out/expanding my family tree.

My great grandmother was Edith Leaming. She was born circa 1874 and died circa 1910 in Rahway, NJ. She had at four older siblings, Jacob, Anna, Susan and Elizabeth (Bessie?). They were the children of Mary Ann Thompson and Abner Leming.

Abner Leming was born May 4, 1822 in either the present day Ocean or Monmouth counties. He died Feb. 25, 1885 in Hopewell Twp., Mercer County, where he owned land and farmed. I don't know for sure if Abner had any siblings or who they might be. (A brother Dave?)

My trail goes cold with Abner's father, Job Leming. He was born in New Jersey circa 1789 and was a farmer.

This is all I know. I'd like to find out is who Abner's mother was and find any possible descendents of Abner and Mary Ann, but any information provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone have information on the parents or Heraldry of Christopher Leaming who arrived in Boston in 1670. His is the man who had a withered arm and his bother Jerimiah died on route from England. He is the ancestor to many Leamings in Cape May area. I have heard he might be connected to the sale of Lemyng Manor near Burneston, which is now called Leeming.
