My great grandfather, Hugh Leacock and his wife, Sarah Jane, came to America from Desertmartin in the mid 1840's and they settled in Erie County, Pa. I have been in touch with the lady who you contacted and would like to be in the loop, too. I am sure there is a connection between all the Leacocks in that area, and I am very interested in trading information with you. I have not been able to find much information before the birth of my Hugh Leacock, but would love to correspond with anyone who has Leacock roots in the Derry area. I would really like to find his siblings, and be able to trace these lines. Genealogy has been my hobby for over 35 years, and I would love to hear what your family in Ireland can remember or know about their family.

Hi Anthony - I was wondering if your grandparents ever said where the Leacocks were from prior to being in Ireland. Either Scotland or England? If you could find out that would be great. Thanks. Linda PS if you want more information regarding the early Leacocks, email me directly at lwbldb@charter.net. Also, part of my Leacocks went to Northwestern Pennsylvania. His brother stayed in No. Ireland.

Hi Linda...just happend to type in Leacock in amazons website and it turned out that there was a book about the Leacock's. I didn't realise that there were so many. Im not so good with all the details but my grandparents are still alive and are well in their 90s. My grandad Thomas(Harry) Leacock is his name and I know that when he was a young chap some of his brothers went to New Zealand and some went to America. I don't know if he saw them again but he is the last one left of all his brothers and sisters. I remember somebody saying that they named a street Leacock in USA after one of his brothers...maybe florida but not certain. I really don't think they would know about anything that early on as you talk about 17-1800s. They are still living In Magherafelt, N.Ireland.Its just very interesting for me to know about the past.
Thanks Linda and pleased to know you. Anthony

Hi thanks for responding to my post. Since that time, I did have the opportunity to visit Magherafelt and I was able to locate Elizabeth's parents. I have also been working on deeds and have found that all the Leacocks in that area descend from a Thomas Leacock who received land with a man named Ewing in the early 1700s. I would be happy to share information. Elizabeth's parents were Hugh and Sarah Jane Leacock who immigrated to the US in the early 1840s. Who are your grandparents? Are they in the US or Ireland? Happy to meet you. Linda

I know that I am related to the Leacock's as a young child I would visit them in St.Lucy and St. Peter, but I don't really know them well, my aunt maiden name was Leacock. Been in the States for some time. I am very curious as to who my ancestors really are. It would be an absolute to know more about my father's family, I am originally from St. Thomas in Barbados.

If so, please email me at lwbldb@charter.net. I found that information last year when I went to Ireland and I've been in touch with Shirley now for about a year. I've been researching the York family for about 10 years.
Hugh and Sarah Leacock from Ireland had two other daughters who did not come to the USA when their parents immigrated. Their names were Elizabeth b. 1822 Motalee, Derry, N. Ireland (m. William York b. 1820 Magherafelt, Derry, N. Ireland and
Sarah Jane b. 1823 Motalee, Derry, N. Ireland. (m.
Stephen & Edward Leacock, Canada

In July, 1941, The Reader’s Digest ran one of their best-loved features, “My Most Unforgettable Character,” by Stephen LEACOCK.

Stephen Leacock was the head of the department of economics at McGill University in Montreal and wrote a standard textbook, “Elements of Political Science.” He also enjoyed humorous writing and wrote “Humor: Its Theory and Technique, “ and “Hellements of Hickonomics.” He retired in 1936, but at the time of this article’s printing (1941), he was 71 years old.

Mr. Leacock’s “most unforgettable character” was his father’s younger brother, Edward Philip LEACOCK,. This is not a genealogical treatise, but a delightful character sketch of an uncle and his place in Canadian history around 1860-1880. Stephen's family lived on a farm in Ontario, Canada, in "isolation the like of which is almost unknown today. We were 35 mils from a railway. There were no newspapers."

I am not a Leacock, but could not resist posting this information in hopes that the article might help fill in a family tree and add a precious story to boot. Vintage Reader’s Digests are often for sale on ebay or antique stores. If you have trouble finding it, contact me and we’ll see about sending a copy.

Becky
Hugh was born 25 Dec 1812; he emigrated to America, and worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania; he lived in Pennsylvania for 15 years then moved westward in 1849 to Wisconsin settling in La Fayette County. He married Agnes Moor in 1831. Agnes was from Ireland but born in Scotland. They had four children: Margaret J., Mary, Sarah A. b.1/19/1840 m.4/20/1868 d.2/22/1913, Elizabeth b. Abt 1846. (Source: History of LaFayette County, WI 1881 - Chicago:Western Historical Co., P 721). According to 1860 U. S. Census data both Sarah and Elizbeth were born in Pennsylvania. Sarah married John Saunders in La Fayette County, Wisconsin. Any information on this family would indeed be appreciated. Happy New Year.

William John Leacock and Family

I am trying to find William John Leacock and his family before 1880. I found his wife Fanny, a widow, and their children in the 1880 Census residing in Philadelphia, PA.

In 1880 the family consisted of the following (listed in the order they appear in the census):

Leacock, William, age 8, b. WI
Leacock, Fanny, age 50, b. Ireland, Widow
Leacock, Fanny, age 23, b. PA
Leacock, Maggie, age 19, b. PA
Leacock, Ella, age 18, b. PA
Leacock, Ida, age 14, b. PA
Leacock, James, age 12, b. PA

In the 1900 Census, James' place of birth is listed as Wisconsin, in 1920 it is shown as Kansas. In the 1910-1930 Censuses Ida's place of birth is listed as Wisconsin.

William John Leacock was a preacher, probably in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

William John Leacock's parents (Hugh and Agnes (Nancy) Moor Leacock) and two sisters relocated to Darlington, Lafayette County, Wisconsin and first appear in th 1860 census. I have not found Hugh and his family in earlier censuses either although a short biography on Hugh which appeared in the History of La Fayette County, WI - 1881 - Chicago Western Historical Co., p 721 indicates he arrived in La Fayette County in 1849.

Any assistance in locating William John Leacock and his family would be appreciated.
Leacock

In talking with my Grandmother, she tells me that Leacock is a very uncommon name. Chances are we are more closely related than you might expect. My line goes back to my 4th great grandfather, Thomas Leacock of Ireland.
The line...
Thomas Leacock, had son John Leacock. John married Catherine Morrow 8/30/1853. They had a son Thomas who migrated to New York and married Alesha Alderdice (also of Ireland) on 4/16/1886. They had at least one son, Thomas Henry, b. 8/7/1890. Thomas married Jesse Hummer and they moved to New Jersey. They lived in North Plainsfield where they had 6 children. my Grandmother, Jean, Thomas Henry Jr., Louise, Emily, Ruth, and Arline. Anything familiar, please right.
